South Florida fish often mislabeled

A new study shows that South Florida restaurants and supermarkets are mislabeling fish at an alarming rate, The Miami Herald reported.

The study by a marine conservation group, Oceana, tested 96 fish samples purchased at 60 locations between West Palm Beach and Key Largo. Oceana found that red snapper was mislabeled 86 percent of the time and grouper was mislabeled 16 percent of the time.

Sushi sellers received the poorest ratings. The group found 58 percent of sushi samples were mislabeled. Grocery stores mislabeled at a rate of about 36 percent, followed by supermarkets at 8 percent, according to the Herald.

Still, Oceana found that locations in South Florida fared better in the survey than previous surveys in Boston and Southern California.
