I gave myself six hours
?to set up a Social Networking Site for a school near my home, from scratch and using only opensource software
so here?s a log of my progress.
I have to admit to cheating a bit ?
My six hours were spread over two days.
because I already have a contract with an Internet Host.
Hour 1
To get started I logged on to the internet and checked out the two Open Source CMS systems I already knew ? Drupal and Joomla ? seeking suitable open source Templates suitable for a school site. I soon found that Drupal had the better templates for the job particularly as Joomla had not updated their ?rhuk_milkyway? template that we originally used on Computer-Virgin site ? we have now moved over onto Drupal ? to match their newest version.
By now the first hour was well and truly over.
Notes
1. Open Source software is free software available legally over the internet
2. CMS is shorthand for ?Content Management System?. CMSs provide the structure needed to set up your own commercial Social Networking Site as a vehicle to attract visitors to your online business
3. Templates are additional software ? to use in conjunction with your CMS ? controlling the appearance ? colour, layout, menus etc ? of your site.
Hour 2
Then logged into my account on to my Internet Host to set the wheels in motion. I like to know the names of the data bases used, and all the passwords etc involved, so I clicked on ?Data Bases? and created a new data base with me as core user. I also set up a directory in my existing site to know exactly where the system was going to set up the new site.
But if you?re not anal than you don?t have to go to all this bother. You can just click on ?Add a new Hosting Package?, select a package with database facilities ? in your case probably ?Business Standard? go through the procedures for paying them and then set it up with the name ? in our case computer-virgin.net ? you have chosen for your site.
By now the second hour will be gone.!

Appearances are everything When you are starting up an eBusiness people who have never met you and never will, must believe that you are someone to be trusted!
Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder or in our case the eye of the people visiting our site. In my case, the school site ? people need the information ? but you need to hold their attention for long enough to ?sell? your product. So our choice of ?template? is very, very important.

Hour 3
So I logged into my account with my internet provider, clicked on ?Configure your Hosting Packages?, then on the ?email? button against my domain name to set up an email addresses on my site eg my.name@mysite.net.
Different hosts will have slightly different access sequences but they are all generally similar.
But as I know that as soon as I have a site I will be bombarded with Spam so I set up two or three addresses. Visitors like to know whom they are talking to, so one address is in my name, but a second one, to be registered as the contact for the site is in the name of ?Webmaster? for the benefit of the spammers
So endeth the third hour.

There are no rules controlling what Open Source can call things and if there were, no one would take notice. For Instance Drupal calls Templates ?Themes?
Hour 4
So go on line and look for a template to suit you.
Use Google or another search engine an run a search for ?free joomla templates? or ?free drupal themes?. Use the quotation marks as shown to make sure you get offered the free versions rather than the commercials.
Take your time selecting a good one but remember you can always change them later. Down load it to your home machine and store it in a directory /mysite/templates for later use.
If this only took an hour then it is the best hour you?ll ever invest on your site.
Hour 5
Now you can log into your new site direct ? using your new url. Don?t be disappointed ? it will soon look as you want it to look but first some housekeeping.
Establishing the Facts
Some CMS software will take you through a procedure to set up the site and will want to know
1. The name of your site
2. Your site slogan
3. The location of your ?logo? ? otherwise they will use the logo of the CMS
4. Your Name and Address
5. An email address
On others look for a tab near the top of your page entitled ?Global Configuration? or something similar, and if necessary ?Site Information? and input the same material.
All this is necessary to get you listed with the Search Engines, without which your visitors will never find you. Establishing the Look.
I, for one, hate working on a site that doesn?t look as I would want it to look, so my next move is to deal with the template and that involves me in downloading my first Extension

Extensions, of various sorts extend the capabilities and look of your CMS. You will meet with
1. Templates or Themes
2. Plugins
3. Modules
as you build your site.
Extensions do not come with the basic CMS suite and have to be downloaded separately and then initialised. So enter your browser and conduct a search for a template that suits you as I explained in Hour 4.
If you followed my suggestion that you store it in your own home machine, in the original ?zipped? form, in a directory called /mysite/templates. Now return to your new website ? logging into wwww.mysite.com ? and locate the upload facility.
In Drupal 7 this is accessed through the ?Appearance? tab and in Joomla through ?Extensions ? Install/Uninstall?.
In either case you will be offered a box into which you enter the address of your template directory (/mysite/templates/name of template.zip) and a search facility to help you find it. Now click on ?upload file and install? and the software will do everything for you.
Hour 6
In an ideal world that would be it: but this is the real world Now you have to ?Enable? the new template and then to ?select? for day to day use.
In Drupal 7 this is simple ? the new theme will have appeared at the bottom of the page as a ?disabled? theme. Click on Enable and Select.In Joomla go back to the ?Extensions ? > Templates?, scroll down the list of templates to find the new one, click on the button to the left of the Template name before returning to the top of the page and clicking on the ?Default? Star.
Now if you go to your ?home? page (www.mysite.com) you should see the site beginning to look as you want

1st GOP trial opens in Pa. corruption scandal (AP)
HARRISBURG, Pa. ? Driven by a hunger to expand their power base, top Republicans in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives illegally used millions of dollars in taxpayers' money, employees and equipment to compile massive databases of information about state voters to boost the potency of GOP campaigns, the lead prosecutor said Monday as the corruption trial of three former officials opened.
The first trial of Republicans in a nearly five-year-old state investigation "is about powerful people taking the public's money and using it to expand and enhance their campaigns," Chief Deputy Attorney General Frank Fina told the Dauphin County jury of six men and six women in his opening statement.
In separate appearances, defense attorneys said their clients are innocent. They said responsibility for any wrongdoing rests with former House Speaker John Perzel and his top aides, including three former House staffers who were granted immunity from prosecution in exchange for cooperating with investigators from the state attorney general's office.
Fina singled out Perzel as the moving force behind an alleged scheme that initially tapped tax-paid computer specialists in the House GOP caucus but eventually widened to including the hiring ? mostly at public expense ? of out-of-state consultants to develop customized computer programs and provide data about voters' political preferences and lifestyles.
But Fina said the prosecution of the three defendants ? former Rep. Brett Feese, a one-time House GOP whip and former head of the House Republican Campaign Committee; Brian Preski, Perzel's former chief of staff; and former Feese aide Jill Seaman ? is justified by their own actions.
Perzel, who lost his Philadelphia House seat in last year's election, pleaded guilty to reduced charges last month. He and five other officials who have pleaded guilty to reduced charges in the case are all expected to testify, Fina said.
Fina said one consultant ? New Orleans-based GCR & Associates Inc. ? received a total of $9 million in public funds over several years for work that was largely tailored to political campaigns, including a program called "Candidate Connect" that Fina called "an A-to-Z guide for Republican candidates."
Another consultant, a Washington-area company called the Weiss Micromarketing Group, sought to analyze voters by scrutinizing such habits as their magazine subscriptions and favorite supermarkets. Based on that information, they were assigned to lifestyle groups with names like "The Affluentials," "Urban Cores" and "Country Comfort," Fina said.
The first prosecution witnesses are slated to testify Tuesday in a trial that county Judge Richard Lewis has said is expected to last about eight weeks.
Preski's lawyer, William Winning, asked the jurors to acquit his client on 54 charges against him, "not just some of the charges, not just a portion, but all of them."
"Brian is not a criminal. He's not a thief. He didn't steal any money from the taxpayers of Pennsylvania and he ... is not criminally responsible for what happened," Winning said.
Joshua Lock, Feese's lawyer, said the development of campaign databases was well under way before Feese ascended to House leadership positions and that he played a only a minor role in those discussions. Lock said he fears that jurors might be overwhelmed by the volume and complexity of evidence.
"It is hard to get your hands around," he said. "Sometimes it's just easy to assume that (a situation) is bad because it can be made to look bad."
Seaman's attorney, William Fetterhoff, said she performed secretarial duties exclusively and had no role in making decisions.
"She didn't have a voice. She had a pen and a notepad," Fetterhoff said, asserting that she broke no rules by not reporting possibly illegal campaign activity.
"No one, either legally or morally, is responsible for the independent actions taken by another person," he said.
Nicknamed "computergate," the case that is the focus of the trial stems from an investigation into alleged corruption in the Legislature. In addition to the 10 Republicans, 15 people connected to the House Democratic caucus have been charged, including former Rep. Mike Veon, D-Beaver, who is serving a state prison sentence after being convicted with two other defendants. Two other Democrats were acquitted, seven pleaded guilty and three are awaiting trial.

In fact, Boomer Esiason is calling on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to investigate why the Cowboys cleared Romo to play with a seemingly serious injury.
?What the hell are the Cowboys? doctors doing? Are you allowed to play with a punctured lung, a collapsed lung, broken ribs? Is that what the NFL is now? Or do we actually care about the players? Or is it all just lip service? I think Roger Goodell has got to look at that particular situation very seriously,? Esiason told USA Today.
Esiason sees hypocrisy in the NFL glorifying players like Romo toughing out injuries and then failing to take care of retired players who live with the consequences of such injuries.
?These are the injuries that sustain,? Esiason said. ?They last with you. They pop up. Then you have to go before some arbitration board to say you need money, because you need rehabilitation and you need help, and you can?t get it, because they?re saying it probably happened after you played. I mean, it?s asinine.?
There?s also hypocrisy in the league changing rules in an effort to keep the game safe while simultaneously allowing team doctors to give players painkillers to get them through games when they?ve already been hurt.
?I hear all this lip service about how we have to take care of the players,? Esiason said. ?We have to move the kickoff up, we have to limit the amount of high-speed collisions, we can?t hit the QB any more. And yet we have a guy who has two cracked ribs, a punctured lung, and we?re going to shoot him up with a numbing agent and put him back in the game? There?s something inherently wrong with that.?
Esiason raises good points. After Sunday?s game, no one can question Tony Romo?s toughness. But questions remain about the Cowboys? medical staff?s competence.

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Needling his top Republican adversaries on their own turf, President Barack Obama stood in the shadow of an outdated and heavily used Ohio River bridge Thursday and called his rivals out by name to demand action on his $447 billion jobs bill.
Making a point to choose a bridge linking House Speaker John Boehner's home state of Ohio with Kentucky, the home of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, Obama struck a cheeky tone that underscored the politics of the moment.
"Mr. Boehner, Mr. McConnell, help us rebuild this bridge," he declared. "Help us rebuild America. Help us put construction workers back to work. Pass this bill."
The president's incursion into northern Kentucky and southern Ohio is one of his most direct and defiant challenges to leaders of the opposition party. And it illustrated a desire by the president's advisers to distinguish him from Republicans and to get them to share some of the blame for the struggling economy.
Rejected as pure politics by Boehner and McConnell, the president's in-your-face approach showed no sign of changing any minds in Congress.
It also was a shift from the president's outreach to Boehner this summer, when the two men tried to work out a deal that would extend the nation's borrowing authority and cut long-term deficits as well.
Then, the president took Boehner golfing. Now, he's taking him to task.
"Part of the reason I came here is because Mr. Boehner and Mr. McConnell ? those are the two most powerful Republicans in government," Obama said. "They can either kill this jobs bill, or they can help pass this jobs bills."
Obama said his legislation would put construction workers back to work around the country on projects like the Brent Spence Bridge, but the White House readily conceded that the choice of the aging span south of Cincinnati was symbolic. The bridge is scheduled to be repaired anyway starting in 2015.
"We have never suggested that ground would be broken on this project immediately," press secretary Jay Carney said on Air Force One en route to Ohio, though he said the president's job bill could speed up that timeline.
By selecting Ohio, Obama also raised his profile in politically important Ohio, a state that he won in 2008 but that George W. Bush also won twice. The Cincinnati Enquirer, however, greeted his visit with a downbeat banner front page headline: "Obama visit won't build new bridge."
McConnell and Boehner, both of whom have supported the bridge project, dismissed the visit as a political ploy.
"I would suggest, Mr. President, that you think about ways to actually help the people of Kentucky and Ohio, instead of how you can use their roads and bridges as a backdrop for making a political point," McConnell said on the Senate floor Thursday morning. "If you really want to help our state, then come back to Washington and work with Republicans on legislation that will actually do something to revive our economy and create jobs. And forget the political theater."
Said Boehner: "I am pleased the president is bringing attention to this much-needed project. But you know now is not the time for the president to go into campaign mode."
Both McConnell and Boehner oppose Obama's plans to pay for his jobs measures with new taxes, and his jobs package faces a tough fight on Capitol Hill, despite the aggressive campaign he's embarked on to sell it.
In the very short term, Obama's visit was making traffic on the overloaded 1963 bridge worse, not better. Ohio and Kentucky transportation officials warned motorists to expect long delays around the time of the president's appearance Thursday afternoon because of lane closures and a ramp shutdown. Boehner joked that stopping bridge traffic won't win any votes.
The trip illustrated the various ways a president can use the power of his office and the megaphone it provides to push for his initiatives and score political points. Presidents often use their travel to get beyond the Washington debate and try to build support with the public. Though it's not common for presidents to brazenly challenge opposition leaders in their backyards, Obama has shown no qualms about venturing into Republican territory. His first speech after announcing his jobs bill this month was in Richmond, in the congressional district of House Republican Leader Eric Cantor.
Last year, Obama traveled to Ohio just days after Boehner delivered a speech on the economy in Cleveland for his policy proposals.
Presidents also often take local politicians with them on Air Force One when they travel. In this case, both Boehner and McConnell declined a White House invitation to attend Thursday's event, because Congress is in session. Obama did travel with Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who is pushing an alternative proposal for bridge and road projects.
"I know these men care about their states. And I can't imagine that the speaker wants to represent a state where nearly one in four bridges is classified as substandard. I know that when Sen. McConnell visited the closed bridge in Kentucky, he said that 'roads and bridges are not partisan in Washington,'" Obama said.
"Well, if that's the case, then there's no reason for Republicans in Congress to stand in the way of more construction projects. There's no reason to stand in the way of more jobs."
Nowhere to be found in Obama's speech was his admonition of late for members of Congress to put "country before party." Instead, he went after the leaders of Congress by party. With public opinion polls show only about one person in four approves of Obama's economic performance, he's trying to put his differences with the GOP into sharper focus.

But new financial instruments have now been introduced that have taken food inequality to levels unheard of in the eighteenth century. As it turns out, there is a downside to playing with your food.
Research now shows the uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East this year were triggered by spikes in global food prices fueled by speculators betting on the price of agricultural commodities [see my earlier piece Freedom to Riot: On the Evolution of Collective Violence]. This is the conclusion of a new study released today by Marco Lagi, Yavni Bar-Yam, Karla Bertrand, and Yaneer Bar-Yam of the New England Complex Systems Institute in Cambridge, Mass (pdf here). This financial speculation was made possible thanks to market deregulation under the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000, the same legislation that introduced obscure financial derivatives like ?credit default swaps? into the American lexicon and ultimately caused the collapse of mortgage and stock markets in 2007 and 2008.
?This analysis,? conclude the authors, ?connects the bursting of the US real estate market bubble and the financial crisis of 2007-2008 to the global food price increases.?
Following this collapse many investors shifted their assets into ?index funds? that allowed them to bet on the likelihood that commodity futures would increase. These index funds would be purchased by commodity traders and then repackaged as derivatives to be resold for twice or three times the initial purchase price. According to data from the United Nations, this investment rose from $13 billion in 2003 to $317 billion in 2008 (pdf here). This flood of cash caused intermittent bubbles as prices increased under artificial demand only to crash because there was no consistency in actual supply and demand (see Figure 1 below). In other words, as the price of food shot upwards many people were unable to buy the food that was actually grown.

According to Bar-Yam and colleagues, by September 2010 there was 140 million metric tons of grain sitting unsold in storage facilities around the world, an amount that would normally feed 440 million people in a single year. In the face of widespread global hunger, playing with food prices as if it were a casino pushed them beyond the ability of people to pay in regions of the direst need. Jean Ziegler, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, has called this ?a silent mass murder,? entirely due to ?man-made actions.?
?We have a herd of market traders, speculators and financial bandits who have turned wild and constructed a world of inequality and horror. We have to put a stop to this,? he said.
The model that Bar-Yam and colleagues developed had earlier predicted the uprisings popularly known as the Arab Spring. On December 13, 2010 the researchers submitted a report to Congress warning of the link between rising food prices and global unrest. Just days later uprisings began in Tunisia followed soon after by Libya and Egypt, eventually spreading to 30 countries and toppling multiple governments. However, Bar-Yam and colleagues also predict that if global food prices continue to rise at their current rate the threshold that resulted in uprisings in the Arab world will become global between July 2012 and August 2013. In this context, the riots in London could be an early warning of greater conflagrations to come.
While Adam Smith may be known as the philosopher who first promoted the idea that ?greed is good,? his earlier work suggests we are not condemned to exploit others for the benefit of a few. In his book The Theory of Moral Sentiments, written in 1759, Smith proposed that sympathy for the plight of those who suffer is an inherent part of human nature.
?When we see one man oppressed or injured by another,? he wrote, ?the sympathy which we feel with the distress of the sufferer seems to serve only to animate our fellow-feeling with his resentment against the offender.?
With the current occupation of Wall Street and the international condemnation of an economic model that would take advantage of those most in need, we are witnessing Smith?s prediction in action. It is only when the reality of people?s suffering is hidden that greed is allowed to dictate policy. While our current system has chosen the greed of the few over the needs of the many, the intellectual founder of modern capitalism suggests it doesn?t need to be this way. ?When we think of the anguish of the sufferers, we take part with them more earnestly against their oppressors.?

Tom Sizemore arrested on outstanding warrant

Sizemore was charged with one count of misdemeanor spousal battery back in 2009 after allegedly roughing up his then-girlfriend in a violent confrontation.

As for his present-day woes, the Los Angeles Police Department confirms to E! News that Sizemore was arrested at 2:30 a.m. and booked at 2:49 a.m.

Lack of Sleep Hurts Kids' Academic Performance: Study (HealthDay)
MONDAY, Sept. 19 (HealthDay News) -- Inadequate sleep and the absence of a good bedtime routine take a toll on the school performance of primary school children, research shows.
When 6-year-old children go to bed late and sleep less than nine hours each night, their academic skills suffer along with their memory and motivation, researchers in Barcelona found.
"Most children sleep less than is recommended for their intellectual development, which is hindered because the lack of sleep cannot be recovered. This is the first Spanish study that proves that losing out on hours of sleep and bad habits affect schoolchildren's academic performance," Ramon Cladellas, a researcher at the faculty of psychology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, said in a university news release.
In conducting the study, published in a recent issue of the Spanish journal Cultura y Educacion, researchers assessed the sleep habits and academic skills of 142 children aged 6 to 7 years attending different schools.
Cladellas and colleagues found that the children slept nearly eight hours each night, but 69 percent of them didn't get home until after 9 p.m. at least three nights per week. The children also went to bed after 11 p.m. at least four nights per week.
As a result, the study revealed, the young students that slept just eight or nine hours each night performed more poorly in school than those who slept nine to 11 hours a night.
"Taking into account the results obtained, we believe that more than nine hours' sleep and a nightly routine favors academic performance," Cladellas stated in the release.
Missing sleep and bad bedtime habits had a significant negative effect on certain skills linked to academic performance. To a lesser extent, lack of sleep also adversely affected skills related to cognition, such as memory, learning and motivation.
"To this end, the lacking hours of sleep distorts children's performance in linguistic knowledge, grammar and spelling rules, and key aspects in the organization and comprehension of texts, to name a few examples. They are basic skills, meaning that if the pupil, due to a lack of sleep, develops problems in this area, it could have a repercussion on all subjects," explained Cladellas.
"Nowadays, there is great concern because children are glued to the television, computers and videogames, but the same importance is not given to them going to bed at the same time every night," he added.
The study authors concluded that primary school kids should have good bedtime routines and healthy sleep habits that include at least nine hours of shut-eye each night to help ensure they perform their best in school.

A few weeks later, the fevers were gone. And so was the leukemia.

Porter, Bruce Levine and Michael Kalos. They had hoped to see some benefit but had not dared dream of complete, prolonged remissions. A relative told the Denver Post that Jarrett was a father and a professional who sold real estate and owned his home in southeast Denver. The family now wants an investigation about how Jarrett died, and the relative said they wanted to know whether he could have been saved if Young had called for help rather than going to meet a friend.
