Bolshoi Ballet Academy to see first U.S. graduate (omg!)

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian ballet stars once defected to the West in search of artistic freedom. These days, western dancers are lured east by the iron discipline of a Russian ballet education.

Around 100 foreigners from all over the world are enrolled at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow, formally known as the Moscow State Academy of Choreography. Founded by Empress Catherine the Great, the school produced Soviet legends Olga Lepeshinskaya and Maya Plisetskaya as well as contemporary stars such as Natalia Osipova and Nikolai Tsiskaridze.

Here's a name to add to the list: Joy Womack, a 17-year-old dancer who is to become the first American to graduate from the academy's Russian course this spring.

"The technique and the artistry and the passion is something that is worth moving thousands of miles away," said Womack, who grew up in California and Texas.

"It is the oldest and most famous school for ballet and the traditions are kept so well here."

At age 15, the dancer came to Moscow for a routine of 12- to 14-hour days of dance practice, acting classes and rehearsals - all in Russian, a language she barely knew when she arrived.

"The teaching style here at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy is very different from the United States. Here what is very special is that each teacher has their own style, their own way of teaching and getting results out of the students," she said, clad in black leotard and tights after practice.

"Sometimes, it can be painful, sometimes it can be very emotional, but I think that it brings the best results, especially because their attention to detail is so precise."

The first year brought tough moments.

At a gala performance, she danced through the pain of an injured foot which later needed surgery. On top of the stresses of living abroad and learning a foreign language, she faced rivalry from other students when she was awarded soloist roles.

The payoff came when Womack performed the lead in La Fille Mal Gardee (The Wayward Girl), on the Bolshoi's smaller New Stage last November - a rare honor for a 17-year old foreigner.

Stepping out on the sloping stage with her, in the leading role of Colas, was 21-year old Californian Mario Vitale Labrador, who is also following the Russian course at the academy.

"(It's) very nerve-wracking when you first come to the Bolshoi because it has such a history," he said.

Nerves are only part of it. Moving to the Bolshoi Ballet Academy has been a physical challenge, he said. His training went from "a hobby after school" three days a week to the "hardcore" six-day week of the Bolshoi.

"There is no slack and you are not allowed to be lazy. Even if you have injuries, you have to work through it," he said. "You are finding your body achieving things that you never thought you could achieve."

Academy director Marina Leonova, a graduate and a former Bolshoi soloist, who wears her blonde hair in a neat bun, said the school preserves its classical traditions.

"There is a whole system of education which has been handed down from generation to generation from the best to the best. And we invest this in our children," she said.

The key to the school's success? "No secrets here: it's hard work, daily work."

Picking up a microphone, Leonova instructed and corrected her students during a rehearsal of the commedia dell'arte-inspired ballet Harlequinade -- "a little late," "longer legs!" she said over a sonorous opera score.

Six of the 14 dancers on stage at the rehearsal on Monday were foreigners, from Italy, Japan, the United States, France, Finland and the UK.

Taking a break after some acrobatic leaps and lifts, Labrador said his ballet idols were Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov - two Soviet-era stars who defected to the West - as well as David Hallberg, who in 2011 become the first American to become a permanent member of the Bolshoi troupe.

"I feel that the Bolshoi Ballet Academy is my roots now," Labrador said.

Womack is striving for the ideal of the Russian performer.

"For me to be a Russian ballerina means to be able to dance with your soul and in order to dance with your soul you need to not even think about your legs."

ECB's Makuch sees some recession risks: report (Reuters)

BRATISLAVA (Reuters) ? The euro zone could fall back into recession this year, an ECB Governing Council member said on Monday, adding the bank's non-standard measures were a significant funding and confidence boost.

A surprise upturn in the euro zone's service sector this month raised hopes the region may escape recession in 2012, even though the broader economy outside Germany is still struggling to gain traction.

The single currency area was likely to avoid a slip into a "deep recession," but will probably wallow in a mild recession until the second half of this year, according to a Reuters survey from January.

The European Central Bank (ECB), which pumped 489 billion euros into the financial system in December in its first-ever offering of three-year loans to help banks' funding strains amid the European sovereign debt crisis, will do so again next month.

"The banks' significant need in the first three-year operation shows that ECB's non-standard measures provide a significant contribution for financing of banks, supporting financial conditions and confidence," Jozef Makuch, who also heads the Slovak central bank, told daily Hospodarske Noviny in an interview.

Makuch warned the banks' dependency on the ECB short-term funding was rising, adding financing problems could hurt loan supply and have negative impacts on real economies.

"The market is still not functioning, we see some opening of markets with unsecured securities, but we are at the beginning of this process and hope it will continue," Makuch said.

Makuch said the ECB's bond-buying program, aimed to ease borrowing stress of debt-troubled countries like Italy, was neither automatic, nor without limit.

"Governments in the euro zone must cut excessive deficits and, in time, reach structurally balanced or surplus budgets. Countries at risk must fix slides in consolidation swiftly," Makuch said.

EU leaders will meet on Monday to sign off on a permanent rescue fund for the bloc and are expected to agree on a balanced budget rule in national legislation, with unresolved problems in Greece casting a shadow on the discussions.

91% Beauty and the Beast (In 3D)

All Critics (81) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (82) | Rotten (7) | DVD (36)

The greatest animated film ever made and one of the screen's great musicals hardly needs this (3D) sort of sprucing up.

What you gain in an extra, faked dimension you lose in lively, genuine beauty.

The 3-D pops out to enhance the drama or energy of scenes in which settings are large and integral to the action.

Some youthful memories are better not revisited, but this definitely isn't one of them. Sometimes you can go home again.

It is a surprise, in a time of sequels and retreads, that the new film is so fresh and altogether triumphant in its own right.

Despite some excessive narrative streamlining, this 1991 release was the best Disney animated feature in years, full of charm and humor.

Disney's gorgeous 1991 animated version of the classic fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" gets the same 3D treatment that was recently given to "The Lion King."

Watching this in a theater definitely makes it feel less like a "cartoon" and more like a significant film. Cogsworth poking Le Fou in the butt with a sword aside.

One of the brightest jewels in Disney's crown, Beauty and the Beast's 3D reissue takes nothing away and makes the film's brilliance even easier to appreciate; the movie is more beautiful and timeless than it ever was.

Beauty and the Beast is just as enchanting 20 years after its initial release.

The apex of an art form, a justly celebrated classic, and the best animated movie of any sort ever put on screen at any time.

The lines have begun to show in Belle's tale, which remains enjoyable but feels more like a quaint artifact than the masterpiece it once was declared to be.

Both TANGLED EVER AFTER and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are sure to enthrall audiences everywhere, even if the 3D doesn't really add much of anything to this animated classic.

A serviceable version of a classic fairy tale minus that crucial touch of magic.

And it is a joy to revisit the timeless pleasures of traditional Disney storytelling, with no attempts to add sizzle from celebrity voice talent or radio-friendly pop songs.

3D doesn't downplay the inherent artistry of the effort, but it doesn't enhance anything outside of ticket prices.

Beauty and the Beast looks beautiful and is sure to entertain, but this experience is superfluous at best-it was already a three-dimensional story long before these new technics.

Better remembered than seen, Beauty and the Beast has been treated unkindly not just by the years that have passed since it was released to enormous acclaim in 1991, but by a faddish 3D conversion.

The 3D is unnecessary - but it doesn't spoil the fun of Beauty and the Beast.

The ultimate makeover story has strong, positive messages.

...an above average (yet far-from-flawless) animated endeavor.

MicroOLED viewfinder delivers 5.4 megapixels in 0.61-inch monochrome display

Photographers who've spent years looking through the window of a high-end optical viewfinder may never find an electronic version that fully satisfies them. But this new MicroOLED EVF may get us closer than ever to an acceptable digital replacement for the TTL OVF, which will never find a home in modern-day compacts and mirrorless ILCs. Developed with military and medical-industry heads-up displays and digital camera viewfinders in mind, the new microdispay is able to deliver a 5.4 megapixel (2560 x 2048) monochrome image, or 1.3 megapixels in full 16-million color -- all in a 0.61-inch diagonal panel. The display boasts a top contrast ratio of 100,000:1, 96-percent uniformity and 0.2 watts of power consumption. There's no word yet on when the new tech will start popping up in enterprise devices and digital cameras, or how much of a premium it'll carry for electronics manufacturers, but it looks like we're closer than ever to having an excellent electronic alternative to the optical viewfinder. Jump past the break for the full PR from MicroOLED.

Android camera showdown: Samsung Galaxy Nexus vs. Samsung Galaxy S II

Cameras

The cameras in our Android phones have certainly gotten better than most would have expected.  The old standard of "it's a cell phone camera, it'll never be as good as a cheap point-and-shoot" is no longer valid.  The hardware is getting better, and the software is improving right alongside it, making the experience of using your phone as a camera enjoyable, and in the right hands, almost professional.

The big news in Android last year on the camera front was the Samsung Galaxy S II's 8-megapixel rear shooter, and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus' "zero shutter lag" camera.  We decided that these two had to go head to head.  Hit the break to check it out.

150 arrested in daylong Occupy Oakland protests (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? Oakland police say they arrested a total of about 150 people Saturday as protesters spent a portion of the day trying to get into a vacant convention center, and later broke into City Hall and tried to occupy a YMCA.

Police spokesman Jeff Thomason says most of the arrests came around 8 p.m. That's when police took about 100 protesters into custody as they marched through the city's downtown, with some entering a YMCA building.

About 20 demonstrators were arrested earlier in the afternoon, after police say they threw rocks, bottles and other objects at officers and tore down fencing.

Police say three officers were injured. Officers used tear gas and "flash" grenades on the protesters after they refused to leave.

Authorities were still tabulating the exact number of arrests late Saturday.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Police were in the process of arresting about 100 Occupy protesters for failing to disperse Saturday night, hours after officers used tear gas on a rowdy group of demonstrators who threw rocks and flares at them and tore down fences.

Police Sgt. Christopher Bolton said the arrests came after protesters marched through downtown Oakland a little before 8 p.m. Saturday, with some of them entering a YMCA building.

Meanwhile, about 100 police officers surrounded City Hall while others were swept the inside of the building to see if any protesters broke in.

More help from other police agencies was also on the way, with busloads of Alameda County sheriff's deputies arriving in the downtown area late Saturday.

The nighttime arrests came after 19 people were taken into custody in Occupy Oakland protests hours earlier.

Police used tear gas and "flash" grenades on the group Saturday afternoon after some demonstrators threw rocks and other objects at them. Police said three officers were hurt, but they released no details.

Police said the group assembled at a downtown plaza Saturday morning, with demonstrators threatening to take over the vacant Henry Kaiser Convention Center. The group then marched through the streets, disrupting traffic.

The crowd grew as the day wore on, with afternoon estimates ranging from about 1,000 to 2,000 people.

The protesters walked to the vacant convention center, where some started tearing down perimeter fencing and "destroying construction equipment" shortly before 3 p.m., police said.

Police said they issued a dispersal order and used smoke and tear gas after some protesters pelted them with bottles, rocks, burning flares and other objects.

Most of the arrests were made when protesters ignored orders to leave and assaulted officers, police said. By 4 p.m., the bulk of the crowd had left the convention center and headed back downtown.

The demonstration comes after Occupy protesters said earlier this week that they planned to move into a vacant building and turn it into a social center and political hub. They also threatened to try to shut down the port, occupy the airport and take over City Hall.

In a statement Friday, Oakland City Administrator Deanna Santana said the city would not be "bullied by threats of violence or illegal activity."

Interim police Chief Howard Jordan also warned that officers would arrest those carrying out illegal actions.

Oakland officials said Friday that since the Occupy Oakland encampment was first established in late October, police have arrested about 300 people.

The national Occupy Wall Street movement, which denounces corporate excess and economic inequality, began in New York City in the fall but has been largely dormant lately.

Oakland, New York and Los Angeles were among the cities with the largest and most vocal Occupy protests early on. The demonstrations ebbed after those cities used force to move out hundreds of demonstrators who had set up tent cities.

In Oakland, the police department received heavy criticism for using force to break up earlier protests. Among the critics was Mayor Jean Quan, who said she wasn't briefed on the department's plans. Earlier this month, a court-appointed monitor submitted a report to a federal judge that included "serious concerns" about the department's handling of the Occupy protests.

Wow! See Alec Baldwin's Gorgeous Daughter, Ireland, All Grown Up

It's been a rocky road for Alec Baldwin and his daughter Ireland Baldwin, but from the looks of their embrace in NYC on Wednesday, you'd never know it.

PHOTOS: Celeb dads on duty!

The father-daughter pair were all smiles as they hit the streets of NYC's Meatpacking District, arm-in-arm, while dressed for the winter weather.

But things weren't always so sunshine and smile-filled for the actor, 53, and his daughter with ex-wife Kim Basinger.

PHOTOS: 30 Rock's best guest stars

In 2007, while in the midst of a nasty divorce with Basinger, Baldwin left a voice mail for Ireland, then 11-years-old, telling her "You are a rude, thoughtless little pig. You don't have the brains or the decency as a human being. I don't give a damn that you're 12-years-old or 11-years-old, or a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn't care about what you do."

Baldwin's behavior caused a court to ban him from seeing Ireland while Basinger, 58, was granted primary custody, with the actor retaining visitation rights.

PHOTOS: Hollywood's ugliest divorces

In September, Baldwin came to his 16-year-old daughter's defense when a tweet she sent out around Jay-Z and Kanye West's hit song, "N***** in Paris" caused her followers to accuse her of being a racist.

"Anyone who thinks that quoting the title of that song is racist is a disgrace to the human race," Baldwin tweeted.

FedEx employee charged for bomb joke on Army base (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? Prosecutors in Utah charged a FedEx Corp. driver with a threat of terrorism count over allegations he joked that a package he was delivering to a Utah Army base was likely a bomb.

Charges filed this week in Salt Lake City show the deliveryman was dropping off a package on Sept. 20 addressed to an Army Corps of Engineers employee at Camp Williams.

Prosecutors say that when a woman asked him what it was, he replied that it was probably a bomb. Military police then evacuated 215 people from the building and the surrounding area.

The Deseret News identified the driver as 27-year-old Kevin Coleman.

Police say the man later told them his comment was a mistake.

He's charged with a third-degree felony count of threat of terrorism.

S.Sudan sees oil shutdown complete by Saturday (Reuters)

NAIROBI/PALOUGE, South Sudan (Reuters) ? South Sudan's top negotiator said his country would complete an oil production shutdown by Saturday, after Sudan and South Sudan failed to agree on a deal to end an oil crisis.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and South Sudan's President Salva Kiir met on the sidelines of a meeting of East African officials in Ethiopia.

The two discussed a deal that "would have frozen the situation and reverses the unilateral actions that had been taken by both," a source close to the talks told Reuters.

But Pagan Amum told reporters in Addis Ababa: "Tomorrow the shutdown will be complete and what will be remaining to be done the day after is finishing the cleaning and flushing of facilities."

South Sudan is shutting down its oil production, last put by officials at 350,000 bpd in November, to protest against Sudan seizing some southern shipments at the northern port of Port Sudan in a dispute over pipeline fees.

Both countries depend heavily on oil and have put forward widely differing figures for a possible transit fee. Sudan has publicly proposed $36 per barrel, while South Sudan has listed figures under $1 per barrel.

The main operator Petrodar expects to close the key blocks 3 and 7, officials said on Friday. Petrodar is a consortium comprising mainly Chinese firms China National Petroleum Co (CNPC), Sinopec and Malaysian firm Petronas. Analysts estimate its total oil output from South Sudan at 250,000 bpd.

"We have shut down almost around 250 (wells). Remaining are 390 oil wells. The program is expected to finish in three more days. Maybe on 30 or 31 of this month all oil wells in Ada, Gumri, Moleta and Palouge will be shut down," Hago Bakheed Mahmoud, field operation manager for Petrodar, told reporters at the Palouge oil fields.

He said current output was still between 145,000 and 150,000 barrels a day, adding that the company could resume production within three to four days. Blocks 3 and 7 provide much of South Sudan's output.

Oil Minister Stephen Dhieu Dau said the shutdown was going to plan.

"The shutdown is going well," Dhieu Dau told reporters during a visit to the Palouge oil field in Upper Nile state. "Now 50 percent of the wells are off," he said, without saying whether this was referring to only Upper Nile fields or the whole country.

He spoke after the presidents of Sudan and South Sudan had met at the African Union in Addis Ababa.

He said Khartoum may have diverted some oil from the fields which lay on the southern side of the joint border to feed its refinery in Khartoum.

There was no immediate comment from Sudan which has said it was seizing an unspecified amount of southern oil to use for its refineries in a dispute over pipeline transit fees.

Sudan has also sold at least one cargo of crude seized from South Sudan at millions of dollars discount to the official price charged by the South and is offering more, industry sources have said.

If I had a hat that was tippable, I'd be tipping it.

Is that even how you spell tippable? Or does it only have one 'p'? I haven't the foggiest.
Anyways! After much persuasion, my friend Hillary has gotten me to join this here forum, so I suppose it would only be proper if I introduced myself. To start things off, I'm Sparrow, first year student at art school, avid tea drinker, wearer of mis-matched socks, a green trench coat and a sock monkey hat, and have an odd love for Thursdays. (The day and the word. It's quite a lovely word, don't you think?) I love to read and obsessively watch Doctor Who, Merlin, Sherlock, and Supernatural (nothing like getting sucked into the majority of the cult tv shows, eh?) and like to put things in alphabetical order. I dunno what else to say, really. I have some characters that are just itching to be played, so I'll probably join one of the roleplays shortly.
So I guess just feel free to ask me any questions you may have or just say hello!

Android May Have Consumer Market Share, But iOS Is Tops In Enterprise

Top 10 Device Q4 v3According to a new report from managed enterprise mobility provider Good Technology, iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) hold the top three spots in the list of the top 10 enterprise activations by device type. The report includes data gathered by Good for Q4 2011 and includes half of the Fortune 100, providing insight into enterprise activation trends among some of the world's biggest businesses. The company found that despite Android's overall market share growth and steady absolute growth among Good's customers, only 35% of all smartphone activations were on Android, compared with iPhone's 65%.

AT&T posts 4Q loss on charges; revenue increases (AP)

NEW YORK ? AT&T Inc. is still the home of the iPhone. It activated 7.6 million of them in the latest quarter, accounting for one out of every five iPhones sold globally.

And AT&T remains heavily dependent on the iPhone to gain and keep customers, despite a vow by CEO Randall Stephenson a year ago to "very aggressively" market competing smartphones in 2011. That vow came in the wake AT&T's loss of an exclusive right to sell the iPhone in the U.S.

The iPhone accounted for about 80 percent of the smartphones AT&T activated in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from 70 percent just before Stephenson made his vow.

The figures are somewhat skewed because the fourth quarter of 2011 saw the launch of a new iPhone model, the iPhone 4S, whereas the fourth quarter of 2010 didn't. Looking at annual sales instead, there's a decline in the iPhone's percentage of AT&T smartphones ? to 69 percent last year, from 79 percent in 2010.

The Dallas-based company has also retained its position as the premier U.S. iPhone carrier, beating Verizon Wireless' 4.3 million iPhone activations handily.

AT&T's iPhone dependency comes at a heavy cost. The phone is more expensive than many other smartphones, and AT&T needs to subsidize each iPhone with hundreds of dollars to put it in customers' hands for as little as $1.

That, together with massive charges for adjustments in the value of the company's pension plans, the breakup of a deal to buy T-Mobile USA and a writedown of the value of its phone-directory business, forced AT&T to report a massive loss on Thursday of $6.68 billion, or $1.12 per share, for the fourth quarter.

It was the first quarterly loss for AT&T in three years. An adjustment of pension-plan obligations was also the main culprit behind the previous loss, in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Excluding charges, net income was 42 cents per share in the latest quarter, a penny shy of Wall Street expectations, according to a survey by FactSet.

The loss compares with net income of $1.09 billion, or 18 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Revenue rose 3.6 percent to $32.5 billion, helped by the smartphone sales. Analysts were expecting revenue of $31.99 billion, on average.

AT&T also said it expects earnings per share to grow by a mid-single-digit percentage in 2012, a bit lower than analysts had expected.

In morning trading Thursday, shares of AT&T Inc. fell 63 cents, or 2 percent, to $29.59.

In a welcome move for investors, AT&T is shifting the cash it had hoped to buy T-Mobile with into stock buybacks, saying it will buy back 300 million shares, worth about $9 billion at current prices, into a program that will start immediately.

Most of the iPhone activations were upgrades for people who were already AT&T subscribers. The carrier gained a net 717,000 subscribers on contract plans in the quarter. That was the best result all year, but didn't match Verizon's 1.2 million. AT&T has been lagging Verizon in this important measure for more than a year.

Microsoft's MIX is no more, to be rolled into another BUILD-like conference

Microsoft's MIX is no more, to be rolled into another BUILD-like conference
Whispers that Microsoft's MIX conference was on life support have just proven true. Redmond confirmed on its blog that the yearly web-centric conference will no longer be held, as it refocuses its efforts on larger and more broad platform-centric events, much in the vein of last year's BUILD. Following its pull-out from CES, the company muses focusing on less events means it'll maximize the effectiveness of its engineers and the press alike. We're also told, an event on the calibre of BUILD is still in the cards, and that more details will follow later in the year. Full explanation awaits at the source.

Microsoft's MIX is no more, to be rolled into another BUILD-like conference originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 15:33:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

US regulator: 'We pulled no punches' on Volt

(AP) ? The government "pulled no punches" in investigating battery fires in the Volt, General Motors' prized electric car, the head of the federal auto safety agency told Congress on Wednesday.

At a combative House hearing, Republicans questioned whether the government's partial ownership in the automaker created a conflict of interest for the Obama administration in the Chevrolet probe, which began after a test car caught fire in June, three weeks after a side-impact test.

The government still owns 26.5 percent of GM's shares.

"We pulled no punches" during the investigation, said David Strickland, who heads the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Then asked if the company got a pass from his agency, David Strickland replied, "Absolutely not."

But Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, who led the hearing by the House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee, said he found it "deeply troubling" that the agency waited until November to notify the public about the fire.

Strickland said he would have gone public immediately if there were an imminent safety risk. He said it would have been irresponsible to tell people that something was wrong with the Volt while experts looked into the cause of the fire.

In response, the committee chairman, Republican Darrell Issa, a California Republican, said, "I hear you, I don't believe you."

Republicans questioned whether the delay was to help broker new mileage standards, which were negotiated last year. Strickland insisted there was no connection and said he had not been pressured by anyone from the administration on the investigation.

After the first fire, two others occurred later related to separate safety tests, and the agency opened an official investigation on Nov. 25. That ended last week, with the government concluding that the Volt and other electric cars don't pose a greater fire risk than gasoline-powered cars. The agency and General Motors know of no fires in real-world crashes.

GM chairman and CEO Daniel F. Akerson said sarcastically that while the company designed the Volt to be a great car, "unfortunately, there is one thing we did not engineer. Although we loaded the Volt with state-of-the-art safety features, we did not engineer the Volt to be a political punching bag. And that, sadly, is what the Volt has become.

"For all of the loose talk about fires, we are here today because tests by regulators resulted in battery fires under lab conditions that no driver would experience in the real world."

But the Republicans' aim was on the safety agency, as Issa told Strickland, "You guys screwed up by keeping a secret."

Some Democrats came to the administration's defense.

"I don't believe this hearing is about safety," said Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat. Instead, he argued, it was part of an attack on the Obama administration's support for GM and the electric car industry.

At first, GM blamed NHTSA for the June fire, saying it should have drained the battery to prevent any fires after the test. But the company quickly retreated and said it never told NHTSA to drain the battery. GM executives also said there was no formal procedure in place to drain batteries after crashes involving owners.

Now the company sends out a team to drain the batteries after being notified of a crash by its OnStar safety system.

The Volt has a T-shaped, 400-pound (181-kilogram) battery pack that can power the car for about 35 miles (56 kilometers). After that, a small gasoline generator kicks in to run the electric motor. The car has a base price of about $40,000.

Ex-BP worker files whistleblower suit over cleanup (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? A former BP employee has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the company, claiming he was fired for airing concerns about the cleanup of Mississippi's shoreline after the Gulf oil spill.

In a federal suit filed last Friday in New Orleans, August Walter claims one of his BP bosses manipulated data on shoreline cleanup and didn't give the Coast Guard "the true status" of what substances needed to be cleaned.

Walter, a Covington, La., resident who helped develop BP's cleanup plans in Mississippi after the 2010 spill began, claims in the suit that he was fired last month in retaliation for complaining that BP wasn't following environmental regulations and was "picking and choosing what oil to pick up."

Walter also claims he refused to misrepresent data so that the Coast Guard would believe cleanup activities in Mississippi were closer to completion.

"This was all based on money and had nothing to do with actually cleaning up the oil or meeting the (Shoreline Treatment Recommendations) or environmental requirements," the suit alleges.

BP spokesman Tom Mueller said the company doesn't believe Walter's allegations have merit but will investigate "consistent with our personnel policies and code of conduct. "

"We believe we have demonstrated good faith in meeting our obligations in the Gulf and are committed to treating our employees fairly," Mueller said in a statement.

BP said in November that it had spent $13.6 billion on the response, including its efforts to clean up 635 miles of Gulf Coast shoreline affected by the spill. By then, more than 90 percent of the affected area had "met the agreed upon standards" for transitioning from the cleanup phase to coastal restoration, BP said.

Walter's lawsuit claims BP took "short cuts," with one BP official allegedly saying BP only would clean up tar balls and not smaller oil debris.

The allegations in Walter's suit are limited to BP's cleanup in Mississippi. The company implemented similar plans in Louisiana, Alabama and Florida after an April 20, 2010, blowout in BP's Macondo well triggered a deadly explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and led to the worst offshore oil spill in the nation's history.

Walter started working for BP in May 2011 as a "state planning lead" on Mississippi cleanup. The suit, which alleges violations of the Louisiana Environmental Whistleblower Statute, seeks unspecified monetary damages, including three years of lost wages.

"He wasn't the lead man on the project, but he had three people working under him," said Walter's attorney, James Arruebarrena.

Kathy Griffin Strips Down For David Letterman

Kathy Griffin's still got it.

The proud D-list comedienne famously stripped in Times Square for Anderson Cooper. To boot, last week, she followed that stunt by disrobing in front of David Letterman.

The Late Show host appeared mildly flustered but for the most part dead panned it as if it were your average occurrence, even asking if she needed "pliers."

Nice of him to help out, wasn't it? We highly advocate for her to continue this pattern. Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon, you're all on notice.

Yahoo revenue slips in Q4 (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Yahoo Inc's net revenue and profit fell slightly in the fourth quarter, the struggling Internet company's last quarter before new Chief Executive Scott Thompson took the reins.

Despite its revenue and profit drop, shares of Yahoo were up four cents at $15.73 in after-hours trading on Tuesday, a sign that investors were pleased that the company was able to hold it together during a tumultuous quarter that saw the surprise resignation of its co-founder Jerry Yang.

Yahoo said it earned $296 million in net income in the three months ended December 31, or 24 cents a share, compared with $312 million, or 24 cents a share, in the year-ago period.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S were expecting 24 cents per share in profit.

Yahoo, which fired former CEO Carol Bartz in September and appointed Thompson in January, projected that its net revenue in the first quarter would range between $1.025 billion and $1.105 billion.

In the fourth quarter, Yahoo reported net revenue, which excludes fees that Yahoo shares with Web partners, of roughly $1.17 billion, compared with $1.205 billion the same time last year.

Display ad revenue, Yahoo's main source of revenue, totaled $612 million for the quarter. Search ad revenue for the quarter came in at $465 million, $48 million of which stemmed from its partnership with Microsoft.

Yahoo said it experienced year-over-year declines in both its search and display ad business during the quarter. In an interview with Reuters, Tim Morse, Yahoo's chief financial officer, attributed the softness in its display ad business to "macroeconomic weakness," particularly in Europe.

USDA Forest Service - Pacific Southwest Research Station

HILO, HawaiiA team of scientists from the USDA Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSW) and two universities will begin research using sophisticated topographic models to identify areas within dry forests that have the most potential for ecological restoration.

The research team, which includes Dr. Susan Cordell, PSW research ecologist; Dr. Erin Questad, assistant professor, Biological Sciences Department at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; and Dr. James R. Kellner, assistant professor, Department of Geography at the University of Maryland, recently received a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense's Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) to conduct their work on the 105,000-acre Pohakuloa Training Area on the island of Hawaii.

The research team developed topographic models using elevation measurements from high-resolution airborne light detecting and ranging (LiDAR) that accurately predicted habitat suitability for existing threatened, endangered and at-risk plant species, which occur in dry environments. In dry ecosystems, high-quality areas are often topographic depressions where soil and water accumulate and where plants are protected from strong winds. The scientists will expand this technology by using data collected from high-resolution stereographic satellite observations to create digital elevation models which will further gauge habitat suitability. Because satellite imagery is readily available for locations across the globe, the methodology the team develops can be used to generate habitat suitability models for threatened and endangered species recovery for dry sites anywhere in the world. These models will help determine which areas are most suitable for plant growth and survival, and guide effective restoration efforts.

The four-year project will begin in June. The team will first develop a habitat suitability model, and then will set up a demonstration plot where they will test plant survival across a range of predicted suitability.

"Overcoming barriers to plant restoration in dry environments is especially critical for threatened and endangered species management. In Hawaii alone, the DoD spends nearly $10 million annually on environmental programs to protect these species and their associated critical habitat," says Cordell. "Outside of Hawaii, the top 10 DoD installations in the U.S. with the greatest number of federally listed species occur in dry ecosystems. This work could potentially re?define the way conservation-related land management agencies in dry ecosystems manage their restoration programs by providing a set of quantitatively based and spatially explicit tools to ensure effective and compliant land use management for species recovery."

Video: Romney, Super PAC spends $7.3 million in Florida ads

>> next up for the presidential candidates , florida , where early voting is under way right now in the critical state . the primary is not until i should say january 3 1st. but mitt romney and the super pac supporting him have spent $73 million on ads. in fact, this ad where romney is praising his family and work ethic has already run in iowa and new hampshire. joining me now live is florida congressman. congressman, thank you for your time.

>> it's good to be with you.

>> so you are supporting mitt romney . let me talk to you about south carolina and how it may or may not set the stage for you state if he doesn't pull out a victory. you see the polls showing newt gingrich closing the gap or ahead of romney .

>> well, i think we're getting to the end of the nomination process. thank goodness. i think people have probably heard enough. but last week i made a decision to for for governor romney . if you look at all the the people with all the political rhetoric , what it boils down to is we want someone that can get our economy out of the ditch and provide some opportunity for our children and for the future, and somebody who has had elected executive experience. and when you go through them all, we have great candidates. south carolina and floridians and the rest of the nation will settle on mitt romney .

>> i'm intrigue that had you think it's wrapping up. iowa went to rick santorum . new hampshire went to governor romney . and today south carolina could go to newt gingrich . that would be the first time that all three -- the caucus and the two primaries went to a different candidate. why does that make you feel this is wrapping up? many people see that as being quite the opposite. rick santorum says win or lose, which it appears he probably won't eke out a victory. he says he's still in it.

>> some people have left the race. i've served with them. they have wonderful people. we all share a very similar political philosophy . but when this boils down to who are we going to get to give our children and the future of america back you want somebody who has had some business experience. i think you just look at the romney experience. he's a self made man. he has the experience, not only as far as business -- i mean, again if you're going to get unique experience, he has it taking businesses that were going down the tubes and making them work. you can't make everyone work in a free market society , but he did it. and then, again, and again, i love to hear the rhetoric and the debate and all the cliches. we need an elected executive.

>> i think people will debate whether or not he's self made, but i'll move onto that and ask you this, does mitt romney need to release his tax returns , and how soon? he wants to wait until april. chris christie says he needs to do it now. what do you say?

>> well, i think that's a nonissue.

>> really? why?

>> because, we know he has substantial income. we know he's made money.

>> so why not release it?

>> he can release them, i think, any time he feels it's appropriate. if he becomes the nominee, he should release them. he said he would in april. and i feel pretty confident he'll be the nominee by then and he'll do that. but the issues i hear when i'm home. we had president obama come to florida this week, and he's desperate in florida trying to make it look like he's doing something, we have 10% unemployment in florida . people aren't interested in tax returns , they want the opportunity --

>> yeah, those people unemployed -- we're almost out of time. on the last point, you say people aren't interested. they are --

>> not one person are talking about tax returns .

>> if they believe that the nominee is for the so called 1% who would greatly benefit from a 15% tax rate , that is a part of the narrative. it is a part of the have and the have not, and what kind of people would the president if it is mitt romney , who would he look out for? would he look out for the corporations that he refers to as people or would he look out for the people of south carolina who make an average income of $30,000 and many of the people i have spoken with and spent time with in your state of florida , desperately trying to find work. they did not lose their jobs under the obama administration. they were out of work under the prior administration, which was president bush .

>> you know, everything starts pretty close to home here. i look at newt gingrich , we have some fine people and they talk good political games. but again you start with the family and then you look at how people conduct themselves, then you look at business. and you look at have they run a business? have they gotten a business out of the ditch?

>> congressman --

>> the other thing, do you have elected executive experience to get this country moving.

>> i get your point. we'll see what they get. thank you so much, congressman. this monday, by the way, don't miss the nbc news presidential debate moderated by brian williams live from the university of
