New mileage standards aim for less fuel, pollution (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama and automakers ushered in the largest cut in fuel consumption since the 1970s on Friday with a deal that will save drivers money at the pump and dramatically cut heat-trapping gases coming from tailpipes.

The agreement pledges to double overall fuel economy to 54.5 mpg by 2025, bringing even greater under-the-hood changes to the nation's autos starting in model year 2017 and introduce more electric and hybrid technology to pickup trucks. Cars and trucks on the road today average 27 mpg.

"This agreement on fuel standards represents the single most important step we have taken as a nation to reduce our dependence on foreign oil," Obama said, sharing the stage with top executives of 11 major automakers and a top automobile workers union official, before a backdrop of some of the most cutting-edge cars and pickup trucks on the road.

"Just as cars will go further on a gallon of gas, our economy will go further on a barrel of oil," Obama said.

When achieved, the 54.5 mpg target will reduce U.S. oil consumption from vehicles by 40 percent and halve the amount of greenhouse gas pollution coming out of tailpipes. It builds on a 2009 deal between the Obama administration and automakers, which committed cars and trucks to averaging 35.5 mpg by model year 2016.

For American families, the president said the agreement ? which will be subject to a midcourse review ? means filling up the car every two weeks, instead of every week. That would save $8,000 in fuel costs over the life of a vehicle purchased in 2025, compared to a 2010 model, a White House analysis said.

The changes also are likely to push up the cost of a new vehicle, but just how much is unclear because the regulation still has to be written. That process will get started in September.

The mileage target announced Friday isn't exactly what consumers will see in their future cars. A formula that gives credits to manufacturers for electric cars, the use of low-emission air conditioning refrigerant and technology that shuts down engines at traffic lights means the actual fuel economy is likely to come in closer to about 40 mpg. Stickers on future cars and trucks will also display different numbers because they'll be based on real-world mileage tests.

The deal was less than what environmentalists and public health advocates wanted but more than desired by the Detroit Three ? General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. In a letter to the president last week, Michigan lawmakers called the White House's initial proposal of 56.2 mpg "overly aggressive," after automakers had said they'd work to get vehicles averaging 42.6 to 46.7 mpg. Green groups, meanwhile, had pushed for a 62 mpg target by 2025.

For Obama, who watched his campaign promise to limit global warming pollution die when Republicans retook control of the House, the compromise provides a way around political roadblocks and a down payment on climate change.

The deal also provides an answer to critics who say the president has not done enough to address high gasoline prices. It promises to reduce demand at a time when Republicans in Congress have criticized Obama for being too slow to drill and not opening up more areas to oil and gas exploration after the massive Gulf oil spill last year.

And at a time when a consensus in Congress is elusive on the debt ceiling and curbing the federal deficit, the president said the fuel economy deal was a "valuable lesson to" Washington.

"You are all demonstrating what can happen when people put aside differences," Obama said. "These folks are competitors, you've got labor and business. But they said we are going to work together to achieve something important and lasting for the country."

For automakers, particularly the Detroit Three, the deal signaled a turnaround from the days when they resisted boosting fuel economy targets, arguing that consumers would not buy smaller and more efficient cars, and that the technology to reduce fuel consumption was too expensive.

That stance has been challenged in recent years by a 2007 energy law that mandated the government evaluate and set new fuel economy targets, by a Supreme Court decision that said the Environmental Protection Agency had the authority to control global warming pollution from vehicles, and by a state ? California ? that has set stricter emissions standards than the rest of the country.

Mary Nichols, chairman of the California Air Resources Board, said auto companies wanted "one set of cars they could sell anywhere in the U.S" and the changes the deal would bring would meet state targets. "We will accept standards that were announced today as being compliant with California standards through 2025 unless and until there is a change," she said.

A $62 billion taxpayer-funded bailout for GM and Chrysler added to the White House's leverage.

Some environmentalists lauded the agreement Friday, but said that manufacturers owed taxpayers a bigger deal after bailing them out.

"An auto industry that owes its survival to taxpayer bailouts ungratefully flouted the public's demand for fuel efficiency and less pollution, fighting for loopholes until the bitter end," said Dan Becker, director of the Safe Climate Campaign.

For consumers, the new requirements are well beyond the gas mileage of all but the most efficient cars on the road today.

By the time the new standards take effect, the government expects gas-electric hybrids to make up about half the lineup of new vehicles, with electric vehicles making up about 10 percent of the fleet.

Currently hybrid and electric vehicles combined amount to less than 3 percent of U.S. vehicle sales, according to J.D. Power and Associates.

They'd also force auto companies to get rid of some less-efficient models as they try to boost gas mileage of their lineups. But that depends on how quickly new technology can be developed. Pickup trucks, which rank as some of the biggest sellers for American automobile companies, get a slight reprieve under the agreement. They will only have to increase fuel economy in the first five years by 3.5 percent. After that time, they will have to match the 5 percent annual increase for cars.

Automakers are far better prepared with a much stronger line up of small cars, as well as hybrid and electric vehicles. General Motors and Nissan are selling mass-market electric vehicles, while Mitsubishi, Ford, Toyota and others are about to enter the market.

Nissan's vice president Scott Becker in a statement said the Obama administration has issued some extremely challenging greenhouse gas reduction and fuel economy improvement targets, but Nissan was "up to the task."

Nissan introduced the LEAF - the world's first and only 100-percent electric car for the mass market - in December 2010. More than 4,000 of the 99 miles-per-gallon vehicles are already on the road.

GM and Ford already have small gasoline-fueled cars that get 40 mpg or better on the highway, and Chrysler will have one next year. Small car sales are up 21 percent so far this year, showing consumer interest is up.

That is perhaps the deal's best selling point.

"It is hard to call higher fuel economy standards job killing when all of the automotive companies support it, and the United Auto Workers support it," said Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass.

Ron Bloom, the White House's chief negotiator on the deal, said Friday it was "an example of industry starting to lead the parade."

Polanski's `Carnage' to open New York Film Fest (AP)

NEW YORK ? Roman Polanski's "Carnage" will open this year's New York Film Festival.

The film is adapted from Yasmina Reza's 2009 Tony Award-winning play "God of Carnage." Shot in Paris earlier this year, it stars Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly.

It's Polanski's first film since being freed last year from house arrest in Switzerland. After arresting him, the Swiss government released the 77-year-old, rejecting a request to extradite him to the United States.

He still faces an Interpol warrant in effect for 188 countries for a 1977 child sex case in California.

Polanski isn't expected to attend the New York gala.

The play "God of Carnage" is about a degenerating evening between two couples meeting after their kids were involved in a playground fight. Like the Broadway production, the film is set in Brooklyn. The original play was in French and set in Paris.

Richard Pena, selection committee chairman and program director, calls the film "a new pinnacle" for the director. Polanski's directorial debut, "Knife in the Water," screened at the first New York Film Festival.

"Carnage" will first premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September. Sony Pictures Classic will release "Carnage" later this year.

The 49th annual New York Film festival runs Sept. 30 through Oct. 16.

Guest Blog: Taking the kids and getting travel insurance ...

We?re pleased to welcome a guest writer to our blog today.? Eileen Ogintz is a travel writer who runs the wonderful site Takingthekids.com, which is an indispensable resource for families planning to travel with children.

Taking the Kids and Getting Travel Insurance
By Eileen Ogintz

For once I kept my mouth shut. I resisted the temptation to say ?I told you so!?

When I heard about the couple?s honeymoon plans ? a Caribbean resort during hurricane season ? I suggested travel insurance. ?I worried about a storm derailing their plans.

But they were too busy with the wedding to consider insurance that they were sure they wouldn?t need. None of us could have anticipated a power outage at Los Angeles International Airport that grounded all flights for several hours on the day they were leaving, causing them to miss their connecting flights and, ultimately, the first two days of their honeymoon. Their bags didn?t arrive until two days after they did.

The travel snafu ultimately forced them to spend several hundred dollars on airport hotels, meals and clothes ? money that travel insurance would have refunded. Travel insurance may also have been able to get them rerouted and on their way more quickly.

Too many people think travel insurance is for seniors with serious medical problems. Not anymore. Not with volcanic ash, blizzards, hurricanes, terrorism and old-fashioned family emergencies causing travel plans to implode. These days, I like the idea of having a fairy godmother watching over my shoulder when I travel, even if I have to pay for it (typically 4-8 per cent of the trip.)

Even in the best of times, traveling with kids can be as unpredictable as hurricane season. A broken ankle, appendicitis, even an ear infection can force parents to delay departure. In other cases, families have to return from vacations early because of emergencies at home. Think of travel insurance as a way to protect your investment in your trip.? It can pay for hotels if you are stranded like so many were after last year?s holiday blizzard in the Northeast or out of pocket medical expenses?as it did for me when a scratched cornea sent me to the ER. ?On a ski trip, my travel insurance picked up nearly $1,000 in costs that my medical insurance didn?t cover. Had it been necessary, the travel insurer would have arranged for medical evacuation and covered all of the costs if we?d needed to change our flights to return home earlier.

The key: Assess your needs before you sign on the dotted line, and read the fine print. Will your kids be insured free?? Once, we were delayed overnight without our bags when our connecting flight was canceled. I was annoyed to discover that, because our bags were returned to us within 24 hours, our travel insurance didn?t cover the essentials we had to buy.

Still, I think? travel insurance is worth it, especially if you?ve invested a lot of money up front ? like for a cruise, for plane tickets to Hawaii, or for a ski condo during a holiday week ? or if you?re visiting a country that might not have the best medical care. ?It?s worth it for the peace of mind too, just knowing you don?t have to worry if your elderly mom gets sick and you have to return home or if your backpacking college student needs medical care far from home.

Most families opt for a package plan that will cover any costs incurred if they need to cancel or disrupt their trip because of a medical emergency, a hurricane, or a terrorist act. The insurance should cover the cost of changing your flight, as well as the unused portion of your vacation, if an emergency forces you to return early. If you?re traveling solo with a child and become sick or injured, some of these policies will even provide for a chaperone for your child.? But you can buy insurance just for what you need?medical evacuation, for example.

As for the honeymoon couple, their airline ultimately gave them some vouchers to make up for the inconvenience. They had a terrific time ? once they got there.

How can we better organise our society? : Kaieteur News

Dear Editor,
When one looks at Guyana and looks also at Mauritius, one truly understands how the PNC and the PPP failed us.? That is why is it so important that more of our people discontinue thinking race and vote for change.
Is it a marvel that Mauritius, a country which had a per capita income of $400 in 1968 (same as Guyana), now boasts of a per capita income of $6,700 vs. Guyana?s $2,800, almost 2? times richer? In Mauritius, 87% of the people own their own homes, vs. where only about 58% of our people own homes.
The PPP must be credited for distributing some 80,000 house lots over the last 19 years but we, the AFC, will do even better; our vision is not to distribute house lots only but to create communities with playgrounds and community centres for people to grow as one people, one community with one destiny.
The real question on Guyana is not whether we can afford to provide a better life for our people but rather how can we better organise our society?? An AFC Government will create constitutional institutions, which are beyond the controls of the Office of the President.
These constitutional institutions will lead the way in motivating our people to have higher levels of trust among themselves and facilitate higher levels of social cohesion.
We know the greatest impediment to cooperation between workers, Government and employees is poor respect for each other and lack of trust.? These impediments must be fixed and our leaders will not be allowed to shout at the top of their voice that the opposition ?has blood on their hands? without empirical evidence, contributing to the mistrust and lack of respect in our society.
Even a President Ramjattan can be sanctioned in the new AFC constitution if he undermines religious, racial and ethnic tolerance and respect.? In our last conversation Mr Ramjattan re-emphasized his total commitment to the rule of law, respect for all races, all religion and all gender.
The AFC Government shall be committed at the highest levels of the Executive, to a better welfare system, motivating greater productivity from our people, and to reducing the gap between the rich and the poor.
Unfortunately, this Jagdeo regime pays our elders starvation pensions; those at the bottom of the economic ladder starvation wages; all leading to more people engaging in a ?survival of the fittest?, selfish lifestyle.? This has only one conclusion ? lower productivity and higher criminal activity.? Nations are never molded this way and it is clear that the PPP has lost the plot.
In the new PPP, it is all about the business buddies and the close friends of the ruling cabal.? Well everybody cannot be a PPP business buddy, so an increasing silent majority continues to punish under the PPP as the business buddies, many of whom are nothing else but economic predators, continue to flourish at the workers? expense.
We in the AFC continue to recognize that the annual budget is skewed toward the friends of the PPP, fostering the untenable situation of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
We recognize that Guyana is still struggling with the inequality of land distribution with the poor saddled with high taxation and hefty house lot fees while the business buddies acquire hundreds of acres of state lands at cheap ?pepper corn? prices.? This practice of ignoring the plight of the poor will stop in an AFC Government.? Fairness in actions shall return to the land under the AFC.
As our Party Leader Raphael Trotman said ?It must be a moment of great change so that Guyana can emerge from underdevelopment, nepotism and pettiness of past Governments. For 45 years Guyana has had the same parties making turns in the wrong directions, disappointing and betraying its citizens and allowing for an unfair distribution of the country?s wealth as the rich get richer while most Guyanese continue to re?main poor.?
Many have told us they wish they can come to our public meeting, it reminds them of 1979 and Walter Rodney but according to them ?we ?fraid of victimization?.
We say to the people, if you are afraid, you do not have to come to our public meetings, we are okay with that, once you continue to read our KEY newspaper in print or on our website, and on elections day you make the right turn and vote for the KEY.
Change is on its way and we encourage all to sit, think and decide ? it is either more of the same or a new life.

Session Title: Ruth and Boaz: Partners in Providence

Relationships and Health

A recent study conducted by the University of Cardiff?s School of Medicine found that married couples are healthier on average. ?A good relationship will improve both physical and mental health,? said Dr. John Gallacher. Overall, the study found that men in good, committed relationships have improved physical health, which may be because their partner has a positive impact on their lifestyle and their choices. Women in committed relationships have improved mental health, which researchers conclude may be because in general women may put ?a greater emphasis on the importance of the relationship.?

However, the study also found that people who are single or are not in a committed relationship have better physical and mental health than people who are in difficult relationships. While the study discovered that a broken relationship can be detrimental to physical and mental health, this certainly does not mean that people should avoid being in close, committed relationships such as marriage. While this study focused on marriage, committed relationships may also include other long-lasting relationships such as close friendships or strong relationships between family members.

Simon Meadows, ?Marriage is good for your mental and physical health, study finds,? OptimistWorld.com (24 May 2011) (24 July 2011).

Connection to the Lesson

A new research study found that people who are in committed relationships have better mental and physical health than those who are not. However, people who are single or are not in a committed relationship have better overall health than those who are in strained relationships. While marriage is a prime example of a committed relationship, close relationships between family members and friends can also be beneficial to people?s health. Other studies have found that long-lasting friendships also have a positive impact on people?s health. People are created to live in community and in close relationships with one another.

The story of Ruth and her devotion to Naomi has been such an inspiration that Scripture passages from Ruth that describe her love for her mother-in-law are often read at weddings. What may be less well known are the origins of the marriage between Ruth and Boaz. From their very first encounters, they treated each other with care and respect. Boaz let Ruth glean in the field when she needed grain, and he listened to her when she appeared in his tent. Ruth came to him with boldness. As was the custom at the time, and Boaz responded with kindness, even though she was an outsider. From this beginning, their relationship grew into a marriage and a child that enriched both of their families.

While our expectations for relationships may be skewed today by the movie image of constantly being overly romantic, or the concept that relationships can be tossed away with little thought, this passage offers an example of mutual, long-term caring and respect for each other. This can encourage us to ask boldly for what we need in relationships, but also to listen carefully to the needs of others and respond thoughtfully. Their healthy relationship led to something that neither of them could have expected, a child who would be part of the genealogy of both a great king and ultimately the Son of God. When we put God at the center of our relationships, they are healthier and can yield fruit that is beyond our imagination.

Questions for Discussion

? How have you felt God working through close relationships you have with others?

? How can you be more courageous and respectful in your relationships?

? How can your church encourage healthy relationships between members and with people in the community?

Session Title: Ruth and Boaz: Partners in Providence

Ruth 3:1-18

1 Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, ?My daughter, I need to seek some security for you, so that it may be well with you. 2 Now here is our kinsman Boaz, with whose young women you have been working. See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. 3 Now wash and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 When he lies down, observe the place where he lies; then, go and uncover his feet and lie down; and he will tell you what to do.? 5 She said to her, ?All that you tell me I will do.?

6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did just as her mother-in-law had instructed her. 7 When Boaz had eaten and drunk, and he was in a contented mood, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. Then she came stealthily and uncovered his feet, and lay down. 8 At midnight the man was startled, and turned over, and there, lying at his feet, was a woman! 9 He said, ?Who are you?? And she answered, ?I am Ruth, your servant; spread your cloak over your servant, for you are next-of-kin.? 10 He said, ?May you be blessed by the LORD, my daughter; this last instance of your loyalty is better than the first; you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich. 11 And now, my daughter, do not be afraid, I will do for you all that you ask, for all the assembly of my people know that you are a worthy woman. 12 But now, though it is true that I am a near kinsman, there is another kinsman more closely related than I. 13 Remain this night, and in the morning, if he will act as next-of-kin for you, good; let him do it. If he is not willing to act as next-of-kin for you, then, as the LORD lives, I will act as next-of-kin for you. Lie down until the morning.?

14 So she lay at his feet until morning, but got up before one person could recognize another; for he said, ?It must not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.? 15 Then he said, ?Bring the cloak you are wearing and hold it out.? So she held it, and he measured out six measures of barley, and put it on her back; then he went into the city. 16 She came to her mother-in-law, who said, ?How did things go with you, my daughter?? Then she told her all that the man had done for her, 17 saying, ?He gave me these six measures of barley, for he said, ?Do not go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.?? 18 She replied, ?Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest, but will settle the matter today.?

Homebuilt experimental aircraft

In the twenties, the first aircraft was for sale plans for the amateur market, not to bring the aircraft Baby Ace. There was little interest in the aircraft industry at home in the 30 years of depression. The 40s were all were about the war, thousands and a pilot during the Second World War. If these pilots came home after the war, many of them were on a level to have to fly them. Amateur aircraft construction in the fifties, gained muchPopularity. In 1953, the CEA or Experimental Aircraft Association was founded.

By 1950, self-built aircraft were made ??of wood or steel pipe and screen. Had no legal restrictions on aircraft manufacturers work, built in-house design and construction techniques could be more innovative. Burt Rutan led the canard design, and pioneered the use of construction with composite materials. Aircraft kits were introduced with the construction of metalRichard Van Grunsven RV with his series.

'70s And '80s were boom times for lightweight, inexpensive kits and built thousands and fled. There was much litigation over this period and many small aircraft firms to be closed or consolidated. Today, the range is wide for the home built aircraft industry, a tube of aircraft projects for a few hundred dollars for the high-end sailing propjet Lancair kits to 425 miles per hour24 000 meters. Home Aircraft manufacturers have a large selection of designs, construction techniques and materials to build their dream aircraft.

Home-built aircraft can be built from scratch building from plans by the manufacturer. And components of plans ready to speed things up, or a kit. Quick build kits, where many components or subassemblies are ready, the construction must be speeded up for many of the kits available. With aseveral thousand holes drilled studs and aligned correctly can make a fast modular too tempting for some. This is a compromise between time and money. Are prone to two types of experimental aircraft builder, the builder and the builder-flyer-flyer. More on these two types in my next article.

Discover The Benefits Of Company Training | Human Resources

Are you thinking that perhaps your employees would benefit a lot from a company training? Definitely you?re thinking correctly but part of what you need to do is to find the right kind of training for your employees. When you have done that, including the whole training, you?ll then have a better ran office.

So what exactly do you get out of such a training program? Here are some of the benefits that you and your employees would receive.

A good training can greatly improve the productivity of your employees. Because they would be learning new skills that they can apply to their jobs. And also they?ll learn new processes or techniques to help speed up their tasks and get the job done more efficiently. Take a graphic artist for example. If he undergoes a training program for the software he?s using then he would learn new tricks and techniques to let him finish his tasks faster and also to make more effective designs.

Please understand this cautiously, the challenge and the solutions have many types of differences. A training will enhance the confidence of your employees. This is more for the newly-hired employees or those that are just in their first jobs. Because they?re often the people who aren?t yet fully confident with their work or of their skills. Now you?ll be doing them a favor if you have them undergo such a training, but above all, your business will also benefit greatly because now you?ll have fully confident employees working for you.

?Network Marketing Training Toronto!?

A quality company training will help motivate your employees. It?s natural that sometimes employees would have low morale when it comes to their work. Perhaps it is because of the pressure of their jobs or that the have been some major changes within the company that affected their feelings or how they work together. Now if you have them go through a motivational training or seminar then you can fix these problems and have them feeling great again with themselves and their work.

Corporate trainings can also prevent people from leaving your company. Some trainings can help them look at the different sides of their jobs. And since they?re given new skills, they would be glad that they?re acquiring skills that they could use both at their work and also outside the office. Also if you notice, the people who quickly leave for another job are those who are either not enjoying their work or that they?re not skilled enough so they?re having a hard time accomplishing their daily tasks.

Lastly, you can get your future supervisors or managers out of the current rank and file employees so it?s important that you train them the soonest time possible. That way they?re well prepared should they need to go up the corporate ladder.

These are just some of the benefits that an employer or a business can get out of any company training program. The next thing that you should do is to find the best trainer or training organization to help you map out the appropriate programs for your employees.

Boat Insurance in Irvine | The Honest Business Report

Buying Boat Insurance in Irvine

Those of you who own boat will want to make sure
you get watercraft coverage.? Often times, people
don?t realize that they need this type of coverage
for their boats.? There are many boat owners that
don?t even realize this type of boat insurance in Irvine is
even available.

You need boat insurance in Irvine if you own a boat, it?s
that simple.? Before you buy boat insurance, here
are some things you simply must know.

-? Many states now require that you carry watercraft
liability coverage.? What this coverage does, is
protect you against any damage that you cause to
other people or their property with your boat.? This
insurance will also cover you for vandalism, theft,
fire, stranding, sinking, and even collision.? You
should always call your insurance agent and see
what?s required with your state and what policies
they cover.

-? There is also optional coverage that you should
really consider.? One type of coverage that you
should strongly consider is Wreckage Removal.? In
most areas, the removal of sunken or wrecked
boats is required by law, and the responsibility
of the owner to pay for the removal, which can
easily be very expensive.

Wreckage Removal coverage will pay these costs for
you.? You should also consider adding coverage
that will pay for repairs and mechanical failure
as well, along with towing charges - should you
ever need to be towed back to the shore.

-? Not all insurance companies cover everyone who
operates the boat.? This is something you should
always ask about, find out who is covered when
operating the boat.? There are several companies
that will only cover the owner of the boat.? Make
sure that the insurance agent defines who is
covered when operating the boat.

-? When you shop for boat insurance in Irvine, call your
current company first, then check with other
companies to see what type of rates they offer as
well.? Always remember that insurance agencies
are in competition with each other, and they?ll
work with you to get you to join them.? Let one
know about a better rate that you?ve been quoted
and see if they?ll go one better.

Before you shop for boat insurance in Irvine, think about
the investment you have made with your boat.? Boats
are not cheap, replacing or repairing them isn?t
cheap either.? Therefore, you should always make
sure you get the coverage you need to protect you
against anything that happens with your boat.

Imagine all of the waiting rooms and typing classes it's seen in its half-century on earth. IBM this week is celebrating the 50th birthday of its best-selling Selectric line of office typewriters. First introduced in 1961, the line featured a rotating typeball that increased typing speed and could be changed for italics, symbols, and different fonts and languages. The typewriter also eschewed the traditional moving carriage, with the typeball and ribbon taking on the motion, reducing the unit's overall size and leaving more space on office desks for family photos and troll dolls. These innovations helped make the line nearly ubiquitous in offices spaces, and in 1964, the Selectric line offered up an early word processor capable of storing characters. IBM would go on to retire the line in 1986. Fittingly, the now defunct typewriter will be honored with its very own postage stamp.

Budget Web Hosting For Small Businesses | HostIdeaz.com

Budget Web Hosting For Small Businesses

Article by James Koh

When starting a small business, one of the things that will give you the edge necessary and maximise your exposure and business presence of course is the internet. Getting online is one of the business common sense that must be applied to any strategy, and the strength of the digital platform as a business weapon is something that can really be quite amazing. When starting a small business, you cannot think of things like pricy offline rentals, office equipment and other sorts of start up fees when you have not tested your idea on the live market.

But however, you need to balance this with instilling trust in potential customers, and they will only do that once you have some sort of business presence. Getting online is one of the best ways to position yourself, and test out your ideas on the market without the risk. Budget web hosting is one of the ways for you to get out there and start doing working. There are plenty of budget web hosting options out there and they give you a smaller version of the normal large business options that most web hosts will give you. The cost would be a fraction, mostly a third of the total cost you would normally occur.

This idea makes sense because you need to save money at every turn, and just because the internet is known to be less expensive, does not mean that you cannot save money online as well. There are many budget web hosts out there and looking at the stats of their customers would reveal many small start up businesses, college students doing some enterprising work and platforms to sell commercial goods online. Their scripts are just as good when it comes to customising your website to be a commercial platform, and you have many options to choose from when talking about content management on your website and installing many commercial functions like the shopping cart and the online verification and payment.

You do not need to worry about security as well, as these budget hosts are build on the backbones of the same security infrastructure as normal web hosts. They do not skimp on their security because of the inherent dangers of malware, viruses and hackers who would try to crack into their database and steal all their email contacts. You also will get plenty of options for ghosting or masking your website, if you are into things like affiliate marketing online, or setting up a vendor website to sell third party products online. As you can see, budget web hosting is here to stay and it is a viable option for at home, virtual workers who want to expand their business portfolio and just for people who want to stamp a business presence online. The costs are cheaper and the functions relatively, the same. It makes sense to go budget in these tough times, and getting one should be as easy as clicking the mouse.

Anderson Cooper strikes balance with new TV duties (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Will Anderson Cooper be able to balance his duties as CNN's primetime star -- and frequent foreign correspondent -- with his new gig as a daytime talk show host?

Aside from queries about his upbringing, that was the question du jour during Tuesday's session with Cooper at the Television Critics Association's Summer Tour.

Cooper's answer? Yes -- without equivocation or reservation.

"We can do full daytime wherever I am or insert a live top," he said. "We have complete flexibility to respond to events as we see warranted."

More to the point, he already balances his contributions to "60 Minutes" and feels comfortable adding a far larger commitment, which "Anderson" will be.

"I manage my time very well," he said. "It's all very doable. It's a lot of work, but I like to work hard ... plus it's TV, so it's not like it's real work."

When one reporter pointed out Cooper would be missing tonight's show and suggested that his new job is already affecting his primetime show, Cooper said it would be just his seventh day of vacation all year -- and that he is sick.

"I get 30 days off a year...and I end the year without taking 10 days of vacation," he said. "I've left just about every vacation I've ever had to cover stories."

Sick or not, Cooper seemed to charm everyone in the room.

He joked about his New York studio seating 20,000 when in reality it holds 400. He said that Mariah Carey deserves a nightly TV program. Most popular of all, he put on a performance.

When asked about using social media, he said the show already had a Twitter page, Facebook page, YouTube channel and Tumblr. He then adopted the persona of an older woman and asked, "What else are the kids doing today? The Tumblr, exactly ... we're doing all the stuff on the internet." Applause followed.

Cooper assured the audience he has fully embraced social media -- Twitter in particular. He said it is now the first thing he checks in the morning for news, and the last thing he checks at night.

Yet if Cooper was definite about the show's social media engagement, he was less willing to commit when it came to format or style.

The focus will shift daily, and it could be one subject or several.

As more and more people asked whom he would be emulating, he said he would be stealing different bits from different hosts -- Phil Donahue, Ellen DeGeneres, Regis Philbin and even Oprah Winfrey.

He wants Donahue's audience engagement, Ellen and Regis' spontaneity and Oprah's range of topics.

In short, he wants the best of everything. (And who doesn't?)

The one subject on which he was particularly forthcoming was that of his childhood, something he has already written a book about. He discussed the loss of his father and brother, as well as all of the worldly people his mother introduced him to. Charlie Chaplin looked old and tired while photographer Gordon Parks inspired him to be a journalist.

Well now he is, and as someone who has lived most of his life in the spotlight, one more show can't hurt.

VatorNews - LearnVest unveils new personal finance tools

I have a fairly obnoxious habit of setting lofty goals for myself, patting myself on the back for setting them, and then bailing after a couple of weeks.? At least, that has been the fate of most of my big plans, including the ?I?m going to lose ten pounds in one week by eating nothing but brown rice and lettuce? plan, the ?I?m going to teach myself Latin? plan, and the ?I?m going to pay off all of my student loans in five years? plan.

My high goals tend to run aground for some reason or another?usually because they?re just stupid and impractical (brown rice and lettuce?).? But other plans, like my plan to pay off my student loans, are on the right track, but don?t pan out because I know nothing about the principles of personal finance.? So I?ve created an account at LearnVest.com, a personal finance website created exclusively for women.? Earlier this month, the company closed a $19 million Series B round led by Accel Partners, and on Tuesday, LearnVest unveiled a suite of new tools and features to help women take control of their finances.

Among the new tools debuted today are the My Money Center (shown above), a Mint.com-like tracking service that lets you link up all of your accounts (bank, credit cards, loans, investments) and keep an eye on your spending habits.? And to help you get organized, the service lets you categorize your payments and expenses into folders so that you can create your own personalized budget.? For example, let?s say you like to shop, go out to dinner with friends, and go to the movies every now and then.? Every payment that?s processed and shows up on your Money Center can be dragged and dropped into a folder designated just for those types of fun extras.

Along with the new My Money Center, users can also sign up for a new 10-day bootcamp class called Take Control, which delivers daily advice emails to help you get on top of your finances based on your current financial situation.

Naturally, you may be wondering why you should sign up for another expense-tracking service when you?re already signed up with Mint.com.? So you can track your monthly expenses; so what?? Truth-be-told, I?ve been sort-of keeping track of my monthly expenses and spending habits via Mint for months, but it hasn?t changed the way I spend.? It?s just been making me not want to check my Mint.com account.

That?s where LearnVest?s new Advice Center comes into play.? It doesn?t do you any good to simply see where your money?s going when you don?t know how to change it, so instead of spending $220 an hour on a meeting with a financial advisor (who may not be so hot on you when he/she sees that you?re not super rich), you can go to the Advice Center where you can ask a question and get personalized responses from certified financial experts.? You can also get access to LearnVest Courses, full-fledged multimedia courses that reflect the same type of long-term financial planning advice you would get if you met with a Financial Planner.

?Mint is awesome, it?s a great tool, but we?re trying to go beyond being a tool,? said LearnVest founder and CEO Alexa von Tobel.? ?What we offer is the LearnVest method: Get informed, get organized, and get support.??

The ?get informed? and ?get organized? pillars are pretty familiar to anyone who has used Mint or Pageonce, but what really sets the site apart is its focus on support.?

?Sometimes, people just want to ask a question, which we know now from talking to thousands users.? Sometimes, people just want a second pair of eyes on their finances,? said von Tobel.

The Advice Center is available to users with a premium membership, which is available as a one-day pass for $4.99, a three-month membership for $39.99, or a one-year membership for $129.99.? As Alexa von Tobel explained it, the day pass was designed for those users who have a question and need advice from an expert, while the three-month membership is for those who need a little more help, like creating a get-out-of-debt plan.? The one-year membership is for those who are about to go through a major life-changing event, like buying a house or having a baby, which requires more long-term financial planning.

A free membership will still get you access to LearnVest's bootcamp classes, as well as content and tips on budgeting, investing, and more.

?Women control 83% of all household spending,? said von Tobel. ?I created LearnVest because I literally wished that LearnVest existed for me.?

VatorNews readers who want to give the site a shot can get a free day-pass by entering the code daypass2011, which is good for 36 hours and expires August 2.

LearnVest has a number of new features on the horizon, including a mobile app. ?Launched in December 2009, LearnVest's bootcamp classes have served over 110,000 women in the last five months alone, and the company expects to have 400,000 subscribers by the end of the year.

InterDigital sues Nokia, Huawei and ZTE - ZTE, tablets ...

InterDigital on Tuesday said it has filed complaints with the U.S. International Trade Commission and federal court against Nokia, Huawei and ZTE, charging the companies with patent infringement.

InterDigital claims that the companies infringe seven of its patents in their 3G phones, USB sticks, mobile hotspots and tablets.

The company is asking the ITC to forbid Nokia, Huawei and ZTE from importing the relevant products into the U.S. It has also filed a complaint in the U.S District Court for the District of Delaware alleging that the three companies infringe the same patents.

InterDigital said it has tried to negotiate licensing deals with the companies but has failed to "reach an acceptable resolution."

Nokia, Huawei and ZTE could not be reached for comment.

The actions come shortly after InterDigital announced it was reviewing options for the company, including a sale of the business. Over the past year it has seen the value of intellectual property rise as mobile companies have begun to understand the value of such assets, it said. Both Google and Apple are rumored suitors.

InterDigital has around 1,400 U.S. patents but claims to have a patent portfolio of 19,000 issued patents and patent applications worldwide.

As competition in the mobile market heats up, the value of patents is indeed skyrocketing. Many of the largest companies in the mobile industry are engaged in patent infringement battles and the one with the largest portfolio tends to win. Apple has sued Motorola, Samsung and HTC over their Android products. Microsoft has persuaded HTC and others to license its technology for use in their Android products, and Oracle is suing Google over Android.

In addition, Motorola may be considering a way to better leverage its patent portfolio. And, a consortium of companies including Apple, Microsoft, Research In Motion and Sony recently submitted a winning US$4.5 billion bid for Nortel's patent portfolio.

Help From An Immigration Lawyer | Type Away VA

Posted by mjhunt on July 25th, 2011 under

Most would-be legal US immigrants underestimate how essential it is to have a competent immigration lawyer doing work for their interests. Relocating from your very own native land to the US or any other nation entails numerous and lengthy processes. Frequently, rapidly-changing legal and political climates complicate things including gaining official approval for necessary visas, work permits, as well as other mandatory documentation.

Each year, several million individuals try to legally migrate to foreign countries like Canada, America, and the United Kingdom. Most attempts fail. If you genuinely wish to maximize your chances for successful, legal relocation abroad, you must seriously contemplate retaining a licensed, competent immigration attorney. The legal migration to any foreign location often consumes many years. With competent legal counsel, however, this time frame may be significantly shortened.

Attorney Impostors

Be extremely careful that you obtain permission to remain in your new location via totally legal avenues. As with every industries and endeavors, fraud runs rampant within the immigration assistance industry. Many shysters abound whose only objective is usually to separate you from your hard-earned savings by promising false hopes of being able to assist you to obtain work permits or visas. It is vital to ferret out and shun these unscrupulous operators without exceptions.

Prior to retaining the help of an immigration law firm, conduct adequate research in advance. The most ideal starting point is the local Bar Association. Such professional organizations can provide referrals for immigration lawyers who specialize in that practice area. Being deported as a result of improper or illegal documentation is extremely disheartening and discouraging ? not to mention financially devastating. Thus, you must know the way to protect yourself by learning the ways to detect immigration scams and avoid them at all costs!

Common characteristics of various immigration frauds and how to stay away from them:

1. Read any visa or permit application completely and thoroughly before you sign or file it. Make certain that your attorney or other representative has co-signed the form. Be suspicious of anyone who doesn?t list their name with their signature. If she or he will not note their name, you may have more than likely encountered one of the numerous imposter ?immigration attorneys.?

2. False immigration lawyers tout their purported power to influence and make contact with ?special contacts? at the governmental immigration agency involved in your case. Conduct thorough investigation into their claims and respective reputations, since they?re invariably false or grossly exaggerated.

3. Many false immigration lawyers masquerade as members of legitimate immigration law firms. The real firm, obviously, does not have any knowledge of or true association with such individuals. You can prevent being exploited by these frauds by direct contact with the immigration law firm in question and verifying the truth of their representations on your own.

4. False immigration lawyers make their entire livelihoods from exploiting the gullible. Hopeful would-be US citizens pin their dreams on these dubious characters, simply to see their aspirations vaporize ? together with much cash and wasted time. Verify every single statement they make by direct contact with every pertinent information source.

5. When your ?lawyer? wants you to sign blank forms, you can be certain that you are dealing with a scam situation. Also, make certain you completely read and comprehend any service contract and all restrictions or limitations before paying a single cent. If you doubt or suspect any part of the services, make immediate inquiries. Do not be afraid to pose questions until you gain full comprehension of any unclear areas.

Summary

Relocating to a foreign nation entails many preparations from the very start of the entire process. From demonstrating sufficient financial security to satisfying documentary regulations, the whole process is complicated at best. At worst, it can result in heartbreaking financial and emotional disaster. Retaining a competent, licensed immigration lawyer is the best way of making certain all legal requirements are adequately fulfilled to the letter. As with all other attorneys, immigration lawyers are subject numerous ethical and legal obligations to their clients. Any breach of these responsibilities subjects them to loss of professional licensure and credibility. Thus, opt for the surest source of adequate assistance by avoiding fake immigration practitioners and all associated problems.

Driving toward gender equality in Saudi Arabia | Morocco World News

Saudi Women

by Natana J. DeLong-Bas

July 23, 2011(CGNews)

Boston, Massachusetts ? Should women drive or not drive? That is the question many in Saudi Arabia are asking today.

When Manal Al-Sharif posted a video of herself driving on YouTube and launched her Women2Drive campaign on Facebook, she drew the eyes of the world yet again to the status of Saudi women.

Driving is only one issue among many. Of more importance to many Saudi women is their personal security and freedom: choosing their own husbands and professions; legal recognition as adults and citizens; preventing sexual harassment and domestic violence; and institutional support for their financial and legal rights.

To this end, there have been many campaigns and petitions circulating via Facebook, SMS, Flickr, WhatsApp and Twitter. This not only raises public awareness but also offers a way for people to join their voices for a common cause in a country where public demonstrations are prohibited. In 2009 alone, internet campaigns called not only for women?s right to drive, but also for the right to work or establish businesses without the permission of a male guardian, to have greater access to divorce, to make the hijab (headscarf) a personal choice and to ban child marriages.

Despite some conservative backlash, there are indications of change favouring women?s rights. Whereas in the past, women?s rights often seemed to be of concern only to Saudi women, today Saudi men ? from King Abdullah to ordinary citizens ? have expressed their support for expanding public space and roles for Saudi women. The King has established Saudi Arabia?s first co-educational university, appointed women advisors to the government and courts, and expanded public sector job opportunities for women.

Male activists like Hilal Al-Harithy and Abdullah Al-Alami have led petition drives to show both men and women in support of women driving. Mohammed al-Qahtani even took the passenger?s seat to support his wife, Maha, driving as part of the June campaign against the driving ban.

Whereas a 1990 driving demonstration in Riyadh generated shock, opposition, arrests and the removal of some women from their jobs, today Saudi men and women are openly signing petitions to the Royal Court and Shoura Council for women?s right to drive. Some senior religious scholars, including Sheikh Qays al-Mubarak and Sheikh Abdullah Al-Mutlaq, have approved of women driving.

Even Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Al-Sheikh, the Speaker of the Shoura Council, has gone on record stating that the Council would discuss the issue should the government or Council request it. Although this has not happened yet, the Council recently approved a draft resolution to allow women to vote in future municipal elections, indicating its willingness to expand the public role of women. This has led many to hope that the Council will address the driving issue soon.

Technology has also played its part. Videos of women driving have been posted on YouTube since Wajeha al-Huweidar first posted hers in 2008. Other online campaigns, such as the Saudi women?s rights activist Areej Khan?s We the Women, have extended the discussion. Yet only in May 2011 when Manal Al-Sharif was arrested for driving, did the debate go viral.

The members of the Women2Drive campaign are not calling for the overthrow of the government. They are not rejecting their religion or culture. They are simply trying to be the best mothers, employees and citizens that they possibly can. And that means that they need to be able to drive ? safely, carefully and wearing seat belts ? to get to work, to care for their children and to carry out the tasks of daily life. It?s not about Westernisation, feminist agendas or a sexual revolution. It?s about going to the grocery store, for example, without relying on someone else.

That said, simply granting women the right to drive doesn?t instantly resolve the issue. Women need driving schools, departments where they can apply for and receive their licenses, and businesses that provide emergency services to women drivers. Given counter-campaigns ? such as the Igal campaign, which calls for beating any woman found driving ? safety mechanisms, particularly legislation punishing anyone who physically or sexually harasses women drivers, are also needed.

The world should recognise what Saudi women have already achieved and support them in claiming their rights and creating institutions and mechanisms for enforcing them. Their efforts for their own liberation must be acknowledged and allowed to lead the way, so that Saudi decisions can be made about Saudi issues.

Women2Drive was begun by and for Saudi women to continue the expansion of their participation in Saudi society.

That?s one step closer to the driver?s seat.
