Twitter Finally Has Two-Factor Authentication: Here's How to Get It

It's about damn time. After an endless, occasionally entertaining?but mostly disconcerting?string of high-profile hacks, Twitter has finally introduced two-factor authentication to verify that yes, it is, in fact, you logging in.

Of course, you'll have to opt in for the new, long overdue security measure to be put into place. And once you do, you'll be required to enter a six-digit code every single time you log into Twitter?a slight nuisance, maybe, but a very necessary addition to a service as prominent and as (previously) easy to crack as Twitter.

How to Enable 2-Factor

  • Should you choose to enroll (and you should, seriously... now), direct yourself on over to your account settings page.
  • Next, select the option to "Require a verification code when I sign in," which will require a confirmed email address and phone number.
    • If your phone number isn't already confirmed, Twitter will send your phone a text for verification. Enter the code it gives you to verify your phone, and you're all ready to go.
            • All of your many existing Twitter apps should continue to work even after you've enable two-factor. But if you want to login to your account on new apps or devices, you'll need to go to your applications page to generate a temporary, single-serving password for that specific login.

The service is currently rolling out, so if you don't have it yet, you should soon. This is an absurdly easy way to protect yourself from an attack. So even if you don't think you might be a target, there's absolutely no reason not to. Because at long last, we're finally on our way to a safer Twitter Tomorrow. [Twitter]

Chinese fishing boat, crew released by North Korea

BEIJING (AP) ? A Chinese boat and 16 fishermen seized for ransom by armed North Koreans more than two weeks ago were released Tuesday, easing the latest irritant in relations between the neighboring allies.

Owner Yu Xuejun, who wasn't aboard the boat when it was seized May 5, wrote on his verified microblog that his captain called him at 3:50 a.m. to say the crew and boat were set free. Yu told the state-run Global Times newspaper all of the crewmembers were OK, and other state media reports said the men would resume fishing for a couple of weeks before returning home.

After word of the boat's capture became public over the weekend, China demanded that North Korea release the men, though Chinese officials have not said whether they believe the armed captors were operating on their own or under North Korean government authority. One of China's North Korea watchers said border guards were the likely culprits.

No ransom was paid as was demanded by the North Koreans, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regularly scheduled news conference.

The incident became publicly known only over the weekend when Yu, who had previously reported the seizure to Chinese authorities, began publicizing it as a deadline for a 600,000 yuan ($100,000) ransom drew near.

His pleas for help and fears that his crew might be mistreated were forwarded thousands of times by netizens, and a high-ranking Chinese military officer, Maj. Gen. Luo Yuan, wrote on the Twitter-like Sina Weibo of his fury over the detention.

"North Korea has gone too far! Even if you are short of money, you can't grab people across the border and blackmail," wrote Luo, who has more than 300,000 followers.

The seizure had added to China's frustration with North Korea over its recent tests of nuclear and rocket technologies in defiance of international efforts to curb the country's nuclear ambitions. At the same time, the Chinese government has been under intense pressure to protect Chinese who venture abroad and out to sea for their livelihoods.

A similar abduction a year ago of Chinese fishermen by armed North Koreans caused an uproar in China when they were released ? some of them stripped of everything but their underwear ? saying they had been starved and beaten.

Hong, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, had declined to answer a question Monday about who exactly China believed was behind the boat seizure, but he made clear that Beijing was looking for the North Korean government to deal with the matter.

An expert on North Korea at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences in northeast China said he doubted the North Korean government would have had any knowledge of the incident when it happened.

"This incident is purely about a lawless act by the North Korean border police to blackmail our fishermen," said Lu Chao, adding that such things frequently happen to Chinese fishermen working near the border waters.

"Sometimes, if the amount they are asking for isn't too high, the boat owner would just pay it," he said. This time, it might be related to spring food shortages, "so they are asking for a huge ransom."

The owner had previously been reported as saying he received a phone call from North Korea telling him his boat had been in North Korean waters, but that he was certain it had been floating in Chinese waters.

FBI kills Florida man with suspected ties to Boston bomb suspect: Report

ORLANDO, Fla./WASHINGTON - An FBI agent shot and killed a Florida man who turned violent while being questioned about the Boston Marathon bombings early on Wednesday, the bureau said.

A friend of the dead man told the Orlando Sentinel and Orlando television stations that he was 27-year-old Ibragim Todashev of Orlando, a Chechen who had previously lived in Boston. Two brothers identified by the FBI as suspects in the April 15 bombings were also ethnic Chechens with roots in Russia?s volatile North Caucasus region.

The FBI said in a statement that a special agent, ?acting on the imminent threat posed by the individual, responded with deadly force. The individual was killed and the special agent was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.?

It said the shooting occurred in Orlando, Florida, while the special agent and other law enforcement agents were interviewing the man about the blasts that killed three people and injured 264 others at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

?A violent confrontation was initiated by the individual,? the FBI said, without providing further details.

Todashev?s friend, Khusn Taramiv, said Todashev knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were mixed martial-arts fighters but had no connection to the bombing.

?Back when he used to live in Boston, right, they used to hang out,? Taramiv told Central Florida News 13. ?He met them few times ?cause he was MMA fighter the other guy was boxer, right. They just new each other that?s it.?

The shooting occurred at an Orlando apartment complex where several people of Chechen descent lived. Taramiv said Todashev and others in the complex had been questioned several times by law enforcement agents since the day the Tsarnaev brothers were identified as the bombing suspects.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died in a gunfight with police. His brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was found hiding in a boat in Watertown, Massachusetts, four days after the bombings. He was charged with crimes that could carry the death penalty if he is convicted.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev had been on a U.S. government database of potential terrorism suspects and the United States had twice been warned by Russia that he might be an Islamic militant, according to U.S. security officials.

In Florida, the Orange County Sheriff?s Office said Todashev had been arrested on May 4 and charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm. Details about the circumstances of the arrest were not immediately available.

Prelude to Disaster: Inside the Oklahoma Weather Center

The National Weather Service forecast center in Norman, Oklahoma, is located in a five-story building on the south campus of the University of Oklahoma. It is technically on the second floor, but an auditorium ?located below it ?dips partly underground, so the experience is more like being on the first floor. It has a wall of windows facing west and is neither tornado-proof nor tornado-resistant.

?We were conscious that we could be hit,? says Rick Smith, warning coordinator meteorologist, who was on scene Monday from 7 AM ?through the time the tornado hit at 3 PM. He went home at 11 PM. ?We have redundant power systems and plans in place in case we?re affected; we have a back-up center in Tulsa and we practice what we preach about seeking shelter if we have to. We were experiencing power bumps here and there but nothing that took us offline.?

(PHOTOS:?Tornado Flattens Oklahoma City Suburb, Kills Dozens)

As soon as the day began, it was clear that there would be serious problems. Monday was the third day of a severe stretch of weather that, on Sunday, had already included one EF4 tornado and two deaths. Tornadoes can develop quickly, going from just a puffy white cloud in the sky to an on-the-ground twister in 90 minutes. Yesterday, the storm systems were in place to shrink that window to just an hour. ?When I came in the office it became obvious very, very quickly that the conditions were even more volatile than Sunday,? says Smith. It wasn?t just that the weather system was the same as it had been; that would have been bad enough. It was that there also weren?t any counterbalancing atmospheric factors in place that sometimes dampen or prevent the storms. The area was without any natural meteorological defenses.

Despite the turbulence it tracks, the command center is not terribly noisy. ?If you were in the room you?d be impressed by the professionalism and quiet,? says Smith. ?There?s no shouting, no panic. It?s like being aboard an aircraft carrier, though we didn?t have the colored shirts.?

The room is configured like a command center, with a horseshoe of eight work stations, each with five computer monitors, for a total of 40 screens. Some of those screens are broken up into as many as four panels, so there are many more streams of data coming into each station. There is one large screen at the front of the room displaying a variety of datasets including doppler radar of the weather system itself. There are 9 other screens in that main array carrying feeds from all of the local TV stations as well as from weather helicopters.

(MORE:??It?s Like a War Zone?: Horror and Heroism in Oklahoma After Tornado Tears Through)

That?s not to say the room was completely silent on Monday. The phones were constantly ringing and amateur radio was constantly crackling with reports from professional and volunteer spotters in the field. There was a lot of communication via social media as well, with an on-line ?weather service chat room frequented by TV stations, emergency response teams and schools. ?We were typing information there too, getting ready to issue a warning. The volume we?re pumping out is incredible,? says Smith. They also had a constant presence on Twitter at @NWSNorman. ?I don?t know how many thousands of fans and followers we might have picked up yesterday, but if you lost power and phone and TV, it was important that you still have social media.?

Sometime between 2:20 and 2;30 PM, the center issued a severe thunderstorm warning, which meant that tornadoes might be imminent. Given the severity of the conditions, Smith says they were poised to issue both that warning and the tornado emergency warning sooner than they might normally have been. A handful of the meteorologists, including Smith and Andra, were clustered at one of the eight work stations. Andra was the day?s ?event coordinator,? making the moment to moment calls. They were all focusing on one of the screens that was showing a radar scan of the entire storm system. Based on the data stream they had coming in, they could overlay a relatively specific threat area on that larger ?image. The meteorologists knew not just the likely tornado?s intensity but something about its track, so the footprint they drew was both immediate and predictive?at least a little.

The actual warning that the center issued 16 minutes before the twister hit included the rarely used term ?tornado emergency.? ?That designation was created during the devastating May 3, 1999 storms that touched down in Chickasha, Oklahoma, clawed their way through the state and eventually struck Kansas, Arkansas, Texas and Tennessee over the course of three days, ?claiming 36 lives. It was meteorologist David Andra, who came up with the then-new term. He was part of the Norman team then and is now head of the ?center. The point of the phrasing was to convey that this was something different from what anyone in the area was likely to have experienced before. ?This is not your usual Oklahoma tornado,? says Smith. ?This is different; this is deadly.? The term, he says, ?wasn?t scientifically studied. It came up in a moment of inspiration, but it was very effective. People understood it. We haven?t used it much since then, but seeing what we saw on TV and knowing what was happening, it was an easy decision to use it again.?

(WATCH:?Videos Reveal Startling Size of Oklahoma Tornado)

The text for the precise warning (apart from the ?tornado emergency? term) is preformatted, so the meteorologists could select, for example, ?radar indicates? or ?spotters observe.? That takes about 30 seconds to do. They then hit a ?generate text? command. The system spits it out, they proofread it and if it?s what they want, they click and send. There is no hotline or red phone; there?s an enter key instead. ?This is much improved from when we had to sit down in front of a word processor,? and type it all out, says Smith.

The crew in the Norman office soon knew how terrible the disaster was. TV feeds provided them much the same scenes of devastation that everyone else was seeing, but they couldn?t focus on it fully. They were also tracking storms and issuing warnings ?across 35 other counties and there had already been tornadoes in the southern part of the state. The day unfolded terribly, but quickly. ?It was one of those days when you look up at the clock and it?s 10AM and the next time you look back it?s 6 PM,? says Smith.

Around 7 PM, the team tried to send out for pizza, but the phone lines were down. Someone in the back of the room volunteered to go out to Papa John?s and brought back enough for everybody.

Fourteen closely related crocodiles existed around 5 million years ago

May 21, 2013 ? Today, the most diverse species of crocodile are found in northern South America and Southeast Asia: As many as six species of alligator and four true crocodiles exist, although no more than two or three ever live alongside one another at the same time. It was a different story nine to about five million years ago, however, when a total of 14 different crocodile species existed and at least seven of them occupied the same area at the same time, as an international team headed by paleontologists Marcelo S?nchez and Torsten Scheyer from the University of Zurich is now able to reveal.

The deltas of the Amazonas and the Urumaco, a river on the Gulf of Venezuela that no longer exists, boasted an abundance of extremely diverse, highly specialized species of crocodile that has remained unparalleled ever since.

Two new fossil crocodile species discovered

While studying the wealth of fossil crocodiles from the Miocene in the Urumaco region, the scientists discovered two new crocodile species: the Globidentosuchus brachyrostris, which belonged to the caiman family and had spherical teeth, and Crocodylus falconensis, a crocodile that the researchers assume grew to well over four meters long. As S?nchez and his team reveal, Venezuela's fossils include all the families of crocodile species that still exist all over the world today: the Crocodylidae, the so-called true crocodiles; the Alligatoridae, which, besides the true alligators, also include caimans; and the Gavialidae, which are characterized by their extremely long, thin snouts and are only found in Southeast Asia nowadays.

On account of the species' extremely different jaw shapes, the researchers are convinced that the different crocodilians were highly specialized feeders: With their pointed, slender snouts, the fossil gharials must have preyed on fish. "Gharials occupied the niche in the habitat that was filled by dolphins after they became extinct," S?nchez suspects. With its spherical teeth, however, Globidentosuchus brachyrostris most likely specialized in shellfish, snails or crabs. And giant crocodiles, which grew up to 12 meters long, fed on turtles, giant rodents and smaller crocodiles. "There were no predators back then in South America that could have hunted the three-meter-long turtles or giant rodents. Giant crocodiles occupied this very niche," explains Scheyer.

            Andean uplift led to extinction

The unusual variety of species in the coastal and brackish water regions of Urumaco and Amazonas came to an end around 5 million years ago when all the crocodile species died out. The reason behind their extinction, however, was not temperature or climate changes -- temperatures in the Caribbean remained stable around the Miocene/Pliocene boundary. Instead, it was caused by a tectonic event: "The Andean uplift changed the courses of rivers. As a result, the Amazon River no longer drains into the Caribbean, but the considerably cooler Atlantic Ocean," explains S?nchez. With the destruction of the habitat, an entirely new fauna emerged that we know from the Orinoco and Amazon regions today. In the earlier Urumaco region, however, a very dry climate has prevailed ever since the Urumaco River dried up.

Chesapeake names Anadarko executive as new CEO

(AP) ? Chesapeake Energy has named Anadarko Petroleum executive Robert Douglas Lawler as its new CEO.

The appointment of the 46-year-old Lawler comes after a tough year for Chesapeake. Its former CEO Aubrey McClendon was ousted last year amid a scandal over his personal investments in the company's oil and gas wells.

Chesapeake shares rose 1.6 percent to $20.60 in premarket trading Monday.

Lawler is senior vice president for international and deepwater operations at Anadarko Petroleum. He also will join the Oklahoma City-based natural gas producer's board. The appointments are effective June 17.

Lawler is a petroleum engineer with 25 years of experience in the exploration and production industry.

McClendon, who founded Chesapeake Energy Corp. in 1989, was stripped of his role as chairman last year and left the company earlier this year.

UK astronaut Peake to go into orbit

The UK astronaut Tim Peake has been given a date to fly to the International Space Station (ISS).

The date of the mission is yet to be made public but it will not be before 2015. The European Space Agency (Esa) is to release the details on Monday.

Peake, who was a major and a helicopter pilot in the British Army Air Corps, has been in training for an expedition to the ISS since 2009.

To get there, he will ride a Soyuz rocket from Baikonur in Kazakhstan.

Tasks once in orbit will include helping to maintain the 27,000km/h platform and carrying out science experiments in Esa's Columbus laboratory module, which is attached to the front of the 400-tonne complex.

Forty-one-year-old Peake hails from Chichester, and is so far the only Briton ever to be accepted into the European Astronaut Corps.

His mission will make him the first UK national to live and work in space, and to fly the Union flag, on a British-government-funded programme (the UK is Esa's third largest contributor).

All previous UK-born astronauts that have gone into orbit have done so either through the US space agency (Nasa) as American citizens or on private ventures organised with the assistance of the Russian space agency.

"Major Tim" Peake has a degree in flight dynamics and is a qualified test pilot.

When he was selected for astronaut training he was working with the Anglo-Italian helicopter company AgustaWestland.

Helen Sharman was the first Briton to go into space in 1991 on Project Juno, a cooperative project between a number of UK companies and the Soviet government. She spent a week at the Mir space station.

The most experienced British-born astronaut is Nasa's Michael Foale. He has accumulated 374 days in orbit, completing long-duration missions to both the ISS and Mir.

Major Tim's assignment is made as British space activity is experiencing a big renaissance.

The space industry in the UK is growing fast, employing tens of thousands of workers and contributing some ?9bn in value to the national economy.

The government has also lifted substantially its subscription to Esa, and the agency has responded by opening its first technical base in the country.

Ecsat (European Centre for Space Applications and Telecoms) is sited on the Harwell science campus in Oxfordshire.

There is sure to be huge interest in Major Tim's adventure.

The recently returned ISS commander, Canadian Chris Hadfield, attracted a big following for his tweets, videos and songs from the platform. His rendition of David Bowie's A Space Oddity has become a YouTube hit.

It would be hoped that Major Tim could achieve something of the same impact.
