Although See My Friends, the new album from former Kinks frontman Ray Davies, doesn't contain a single new song, Davies says he encountered surprise after surprise while making it. The record features revamped versions of Davies' classic Kinks songs, made collaboratively with other artists ? including Jackson Browne, Lucinda Williams, Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, whose song choice came as a particular shock.

"I naturally thought it would be one of the usual suspects like 'You Really Got Me' or 'All Day and All of the Night,' but he chose the song 'Better Things,' " Davies tells Weekend Edition Sunday host Liane Hansen. "That was a minor, minor success for The Kinks in America in the 1980s when we were touring. But I thought about it and listened to the original Kinks song, and it really has some Bruce Springsteen in it. It seemed to be a natural."

Davies says he was also stunned by his collaborators' musicianship. Metallica turns in a cranked-to-11 take on "You Really Got Me," the performance of which Davies compares to that of an accomplished actor: "Suddenly, as they go on, they switch into gear and become this great force." Meanwhile, Mumford & Sons' medley of "Days" and "This Time Tomorrow" presented Davies with an unusual dilemma in post-production.

"When you mix, you usually bring up the individual instruments and try to make them better by moving, cutting and pasting with digital technology," Davies says. "But I realized you couldn't do that with this group, because they were such a unit. And that's [a] sign of a great band, when all the parts work together."

One collaborator is notably absent on See My Friends: Davies' younger brother Dave, The Kinks' lead guitarist. Tension between the two brothers contributed to the band's split in the mid-1990s. Davies says a reunion isn't out of the question, but that if it happens, it will be on specific terms.

"If I perform again with my brother, it will not be in a position of peace and harmony, because that's not a great situation for us," he says. "The fire and energy is the important thing. It's the thing that made us fight and punch our way into a career."

Article 007 ? How Payday Loans Really Work

Short on cash? Need money? With the high cost of living and the unpredictable circumstances we cannot escape everyday, payday loans are an amazing tool invented to get cash when you badly need it. But how do payday loans really work?

Payday loans give the borrower the amount of money he needs. The borrower writes a check of the amount needed with the payday loan company?s fixed interest fee, and the money he needs is given right then and there.

The interest fee of a payday loan is usually a percentage the amount borrowed. For every $50 or $100 loaned, there will be an interest fee of $15 to $30. So a personal check of $115 ($100 borrowed money and $15 fee) will be on hold for up to 14 days or until the next payday.

If you applied for a payday loan but were unable to repay the loan on the set schedule, you can ask for a roll-over or an extension on your loan. But there will be another fee for every extension.

You should know how much you owe the loan company. The Truth Lending Acting permits the cost of payday loans be disclosed. Have all the information such as financial change, annual percentage rate (APR), interest fee, and so on.

Like everything else acquired over credit, payday loans should be a last option.

Here are nine things to remember about payday loans:

1. Shop carefully ? like comparing prices between two interesting items, the same goes in selecting a payday loan company. Choose the company with lower interest rates, APR?s, and friendlier payment terms.
2. Know the terms ? Find out and analyze their terms before availing of a payday loan company?s services.
3. Compare APR and finance charge ? Again the lower the rate, the easier for you to repay the amount borrowed.
4. Ask questions ? Don?t be afraid to ask questions to your creditors ? after all, they?re getting paid to be of service to you. Ask more time to pay your bills if you?re not able to on the planned date.
5. Realistic budget ? Be sure that the amount of cash you loan is within your savings budget for you to repay them on time.
6. Build savings ? Hold other expenses and save money left over from your income so as not to go on loan again. Save money to repay the loan you borrowed with the interest fee.
7. Overdraft protection ? This is essential to your credit account for it protects you from further credit problems. Find out if the company has this on your checking account.
8. Nonprofit groups ? Check out nonprofit groups in your community for credit guidance.
9. Other sources ? Find out with your employer, credit unions, or housing authority for no- or a low-cost credit counseling program to get you out of debt and help you with financial woes.

Payday loans are amazingly convenient, but be cautious and responsible in using them. Remember to only borrow what you can afford to pay after a couple of weeks. If you can not repay, then talk to the business and they will be able to work out a payment plan for you.

Top Democrat Channels Cheney, Blasts Patriot Act Foes as Osama Pals

Updated, 2:20 p.m., May 27

It used to be that Sen. Harry Reid had a problem with smearing surveillance skeptics as terrorist allies. But now that some Republicans oppose the Patriot Act, Reid is calling the objectors Osama?s BFFs. Dick Cheney would be proud.

All the libertarian senator Rand Paul wanted was to add amendments to the government?s cherished surveillance law that would protect Americans? privacy. For this, Reid, the Senate Democratic leader, charged that Paul?s efforts would ?increase the risk of a retaliatory terrorist strike against the homeland and hamper our ability to deal a truly fatal blow to al-Qaida.?

It?s not just that Reid is demagoguing Rand Paul. It?s that Reid?s objections betray the depths of his hypocrisy on both surveillance and its politics, as revealed by the sophisticated consistency-generating algorithm known as Google.

Remember back when a Republican was in the White House and demanded broad surveillance authority? Here?s Reid back then.??Whether out of convenience, incompetence, or outright disdain for the rule of law, the administration chose to ignore Congress and ignore the Constitution,? Reid said about Bush?s warrantless surveillance program. When Bush insisted Congress entrench that surveillance with legislation in 2008, Reid turned around and demanded Bush ?stop fear-mongering and start being honest with the American people about national security.? Any claim about the detrimental impact about a lapse in widespread surveillance were ?scare tactics? to Reid that??irresponsibly distort reality.? (Then Reid rolled over for Bush.)

That?s nowhere near the end of Reid?s hypocrisy here. When the Senate debated renewing the Patriot Act in 2006, Reid, a supporter of the bill?s surveillance procedures, himself slowed up the bill?s passage to allow amendments to it ? the better to allow ?sensible checks on the arbitrary exercise of executive power.? Sounding a whole lot like Rand Paul, the 2006-vintage Reid registered his ?objection to the procedural maneuver under which Senators have been blocked from offering any amendments to this bill? and reminded his colleagues,??the hallmark of the Senate is free speech and open debate.?

Reid could hardly be more of an opportunist here. He favors broad surveillance authorities ? just as long as those scary Republicans stop being mean to liberals. When Attorney General John Ashcroft warned civil libertarians that their ?phantoms of lost liberty? only aid terrorists,? Reid told CNN on December 8, 2001 that ?people should just cool their jets? ? but not that Ashcroft was actually, you know, wrong. By contrast, the ultra-conservative pundit Bob Novak said Ashcroft made ?one of the most disreputable statements I have heard from an attorney general.?

Ultimately, for all of Reid?s doomsaying, it appears?Reid acquiesced to Paul, who?ll get to offer his Patriot amendments after all if he can overcome some GOP procedural maneuvering. A final Senate vote on the three expiring provisions of the Patriot Act is expected later today. It appears the only thing more permanent than wide-ranging surveillance is hypocrisy about it.

Update: This response comes from Adam Jentleson, a spokesman for Reid:

?For the record, this was never about privacy. It was always about one senator?s ideological politics putting our national security at risk.

?Senator Reid has always fought to protect Americans? privacy and will continue to do so because he recognizes that we must maintain vigorous oversight over the use of the tools provided by the Patriot Act in order to protect the privacy of average citizens. Thanks to Senate Democrats led by Judiciary Committee Chairman Leahy, the Department of Justice has already begun to implement a number of key privacy protections and oversight mechanisms. We sought to codify some of these efforts, but faced intractable Republican opposition.

?We also defeated House Republicans? attempt to seek long-term ? and, in some cases, even permanent ? extensions of these authorities with no additional oversight. Instead, we secured a shorter, four-year sunset that will ensure we have the opportunity to revisit these authorities if any abuses are committed.

?Senator Paul?s sticking point had nothing to do with protecting the privacy of average Americans. To the contrary, he was threatening to let the Patriot Act expire ? and put our national security at risk ? in order to push an amendment that would let terrorists cover up their gun purchases.

?In fact, before we reached a final agreement, Senator Paul rejected a prior offer from Senator Reid that would have given him votes on four of his amendments, despite clear statements from FBI Director Robert Mueller and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper that letting the Patriot Act expire would have posed significant national security risks.?

Diffus Solar Handbag charges your cell during the day, may actually leave the closet

Sure, solar-paneled bags are occasionally practical and always geeky, but the women in our lives wouldn't dream of letting us walk around with one, let alone using one themselves. That soon may change. The Solar Handbag from Diffus, a Danish design studio, integrates 100 "solar sequins" in a pattern that ladies may actually find socially acceptable, perhaps even attractive. During the day, the bag is capable of generating 2 watts of power, enough to charge many portable gadgets. After the sun sets, however, any leftover energy is redirected to a set of optical fibers, which glow whenever you open the bag to search for mascara, ABC gum stuffed in crumbled receipts, or whatever else you've decided may never leave your side. There's no word on whether the bag will actually come to market, but if it does go to production, it may just end up being affordable, given that many handbag budgets far exceed the amount we set aside for gadgets.

Cookbook Review ? Vegan Baking (Banana Nut Bread Recipe) ? Gazing In

I came home from hiking yesterday to a copy of The Complete Idiot?s Guide to Vegan Baking waiting for me. The book came out recently, in April, and is what i would call a good intro to vegan baking ? containing a large chapter on the how-to?s and basic ingredients needed. If one is getting into vegan baking this is a good starting book before say you start using some of the other, more complicated cookbooks ( see here for more examples of Vegan Baking Cookbooks ). It is a mix of mostly sweet treats but also sections on yeast breads, rolls and crackers ? so lots of options.

I tried out their recipe for banana bread ? always a good way to get a feel for the style of baking in a book. It turned out nicely dense and with a light flavor. I might say I felt it needed more vanilla ? I would double that and the cinnamon.

Banana Nut Bread (Pages 78-79)

Ingredients:

  • 1? cups all-purpose flour
  • ? tsp freshly ground nutmeg
  • ? tsp ground cinnamon
  • ? tsp kosher salt
  • 1 stick Earth Balance buttery stick
  • ? cup organic granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp flaxseed meal + 3 Tbsp water
  • 1 cup mashed bananas (depending on size, 2-4)
  • ? tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ? cup finely chopped raw walnuts

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350? and spray a 9?5? loaf pan with cooking spray.

Sift the flour, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt into a small mixing bowl. Mix the flaxseed meal and water together in a small bowl and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

Add the Earth Balance and sugar to a stand mixer bowl, beat till light and fluffy, about 2 minutes, with the paddle attachment. (Kirk got me this New Metro Design Beater Blade awhile back, love it for batters.)

Add the flaxseed, mashed bananas and vanilla, beating in for a minute.

Turn down to low and slowly add in the flour and mix in well.Take the bowl off the mixer.

In a small bowl add the vinegar and then the baking soda (it will foam a lot). Pour into the batter and mix in by hand (do not use the mixer, it can back splash you!) and then add in the nuts.

Pour/scrape the batter into the pan and bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes. Check at 50 and then every 10 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.

Let cool a couple of minutes and then pop out and let cool on a wire rack.

~Sarah

Then in 1900, officials added the two new Olympic fencing swords are based on two different events: the sword and scabbard. The sword is a weapon, something like a spreadsheet. But contains the difference:

In addition, competition is by the sword the entire region of the body as a legitimate area of ??interest.

But, if you begin by starting a home based business now, you?ll be investing in something that can prosper in the future until the economy gets better.

Start out by thinking, during these times, what can you do to improve on people?s lives? Just because times are slow, it doesn?t mean that people have stopped buying things. There?s still time to make money. Come up with some ideas on what you could potentially create a business around. What are you good at? What are your hobbies? What things are you interested in? Is it possible, even to the slightest degree, to turn these things into a business that may work for you in the future?

For example if you like to paint and have some spare time right now, maybe you can paint in your home and sell your paintings through a website. Or if you majored in finance, but can?t find a job right now, maybe you can utilized this time to write an e-book on debt management and credit tips. There are many possibilities out there. They key is to just come up with some ideas right now, and start planting your seeds, rather that plant yourself in the world of economic crises from news and media.

See, if you took the steps it takes to get from one point to another point without any distractions or interruptions, you would be able to get their fast. In any business, you will face problems, especially when dealing with the internet. The internet is a place where it may be hard to adjust if you?re just starting out. But there is always room to figure out what things you?ll have to deal with in order to get to the financial success that you?ve always wanted.

Eddie Vedder On Giving The Ukulele A Turn In The Spotlight

Eddie Vedder.

"It's an activist instrument," declared Eddie Vedder last week, speaking by phone from a Seattle recording studio. He wasn't talking about the Fender electric he once decorated in tribute to the late radical historian Howard Zinn, or any of the fascist-killing machines he's wielded in two decades worth of playing with Pearl Jam.

The singer and songwriter meant the ukulele, which he picked up in a Hawaiian convenience store in the mid-1990s as a traveling companion and songwriting tool. The soulful muse of his long-in-the-making second solo album, Ukulele Songs, is an instant community-builder.

Vedder, an incurably effusive anecdotist, had a story ready to make his point.

"I'll never forget, we were sitting around a campfire late at night," he said, not specifying the location of this particular clambake. "One of the locals was a fisherman I'd met before, and we got into a serious discussion about environmental issues. And then after that talk was over, some instruments started getting passed around.

"There were a couple of musicians in the group; a Brazilian guitarist, and then me... and this fisherman, his name was Eddie too, but that's where the similarities ended. He's maybe 60, 65, but could easily arm-wrestle me to the ground. He'd lived off the land and sea for probably his whole life. He picked up the ukulele.

"His hands were so big it was hard to imagine he could get chords out of it. And he played the most beautiful rendition of 'I Can't Help Falling in Love With You.' Elvis. You would have never known. So it's like, imagine the possibilities with that little instrument!"

Vedder said he hopes that Ukulele Songs would encourage listeners to step away from their computers and televisions and make some music of their own, preferably with friends. Some of the material collected on the record was written back in the mid-'90s after Vedder first picked up the instrument. For him, the modest chordophone itself has been a companion in times of loneliness.

"If it weren't for the ukulele I would have been by myself," he says of the period. "The songs were just written for my own benefit."

?

Indeed, Ukulele Songs is a very personal collection ? an arc of mostly love songs ? dedicated to his wife, Jill McCormick, and their two daughters, Olivia and Harper Moon. Though the famously self-protective rocker declares that all the songs are "works of fiction," the more private writing process has led to a set of tracks that are more revealing, frank and sweeter than his usual output.

"The song selection was easy because those were the ones I had," said Vedder. "A lot's different since I first picked up this instrument; my life is quite different than I could have imagined."

With Pearl Jam, Vedder helped invent the sound of millennial hard rock ? an open marriage between punk, heavy metal and campfire folk songs that edged toward classic rock, partly because of Vedder's active engagement with influences like The Who and Bruce Springsteen. Also a leader when it comes to progressive social activism and ethical music business practices, Pearl Jam now defines what it means to be a fully grown rock band, still kicking as many of their peers flounder or find a spot on the nostalgia circuit.

The band celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with a Labor Day music festival in Wisconsin, a documentary directed by longtime pal Cameron Crowe, a book and a series of album reissues. Ukulele Songs isn't officially part of this commemorative process. Yet because it features material written over more than a decade of the band's life, including the driving "Can't Keep," which also appears on Pearl Jam's 2002 album Riot Act, Vedder's album presents itself as part of the band's history ? the anima to the group's noisy animus.

Vedder has used the uke to provide counterpoint during encores on Pearl Jam tours and on the solo tour he embarked upon in 2008. He noted that it's great for stimulating sing-alongs. "It's such a small instrument," he said. "People are like, 'Let's help it out!'"

The uke's inherent modesty may be one part of its appeal to Vedder, who feels the weight of his fans' ardent devotion and has worked hard to live a responsible version of the rock star life.

"I think for some reason it might be more difficult to tell a story in a band song," said Vedder. "Every time we accomplish that, the outcome seems to be positive, in terms of how it connects to people who hear it. This, there's so much room for it."

Jake Shimabukuro, the leading young virtuoso of the instrument, suggested in an email that the instrument's humble nature might be one reason stars like Vedder, Taylor Swift and Zooey Deschanel find it so attractive.

"I love that people don't take the instrument seriously," wrote Shimabukuro, who himself is known for kicking out major jams. "In fact, one of the best things about being a touring ukulele player is that audiences all over the world have such low expectations of the music. The ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to play, and you don't have to be a musician to play it."

Vedder, who played a variety of ukes on the album, values it as a fount of melody. He finds his inner crooner on originals like the yearning "Longing To Belong" and choice covers, including duets with Glen Hansard of the Frames and Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power. (In the past, he's also performed "Tonight You Belong To Me," the flapper-era tune he shares with Marshall, with Portland's all-star drummer Janet Weiss.)

The range of emotion Vedder expresses on Ukulele Songs, which he co-produced with longtime Pearl Jam associate Adam Kasper, proves that for him, this outing is not just a novelty. Some, like the bereft "Sleeping By Myself," bear lyrics as dark as any Pearl Jam demon-freer.

"It is a happy sound, and by using it to process some emotions that were less than joyful, it somehow balanced it out to where it didn't sound like suicide music," he said.

From devastating heartache to the hope he feels when he looks at his two daughters, Vedder has uncovered an impressive range of feeling while strumming the instrument he considers a lifelong friend. He'll take it on another solo tour this summer before rejoining Pearl Jam for some fall dates. And he hopes to get people singing.

"I know for the vinyl version of the record there's going to be a real book included, with the music and the notation and whatever bizarre chords I've come up with ? a legible version of the notebook I was creating all those years," he said. "I'm just encouraging people to turn off the TV and play these songs if you want. Some of them are really depressing. But have fun with it."

Getting Into Business | toppageresourceblog.info

Getting into business can be challenging yet fun, educational, and profitable. Starting your own business is not that complicated; it starts with an idea. All ventures begin life as an idea and you build on it until you have a sound plan, and then you start to realize that idea. Getting into business first you must have an idea of what kind of business you would like to have. There are several ways to do business, you can buy and sell goods, you can produce and sell, or you can provide a service. The next thing you have to deal with is risk.

Risk is a major factor one must consider when going into business, there is no such thing a business without risk. One cannot totally eliminate risk when doing business but it can be minimized by assessing the risks involved before going into any venture. This is what we call risk management; we cannot eliminate risk in business but we can manage them. You can start by identifying the potential problems that might arise based on the kind of business that you?d like to venture into. Each type of business have a certain set of problems unique to that type of venture, by being able to foresee these problems and preparing a contingency plan before they even happen helps minimize your risk. Identify all government agencies concerned with your business and be sure to comply with all requirements set forth by these agencies; this can save you a lot of headache in the future. If you can identify your potential problems then you can prepare for them even before they happen; this way you spend less time solving problems and you can focus more on the stability and growth of your business.

Marketing is crucial to any business so you also have to do market assessment. You have to conduct an in-depth study of your target market based on the kind of business you intend to go into. This way you?ll find out if there is an actual or potential market for what you have to offer. You?ll also be able to find out if your target market is untapped or not, does the market still have growth potential or it is already heavily saturated. Through market assessment you can also learn how other businesses market their products and services. Market assessment also plays an important role in risk management.

The next thing you?d have to consider and one of the most important is the capitalization. This has been a bane for many entrepreneurs because not everyone has enough money to finance a venture. However, do not be discouraged. There are ways to start a business with little or no capitalization at all. One way to go is to find a business partner who will share the work and the capitalization with you. Your share in the business will depend on how much work and money you put in to start the venture. If you have no money at all, what you have to do is find yourself a financial partner. A financial partner is the person who will provide the cash to bankroll the venture. You will be playing the part of the industrial partner. Your contribution into the venture will be brains and brawn. However, for this to work you need to have a sound business proposal, you have to be able to prove that it can be done, that the risks are manageable and that the venture is profitable. Why be satisfied with being an employee when you can be an entrepreneur.

Great Skiing at Disabled Sports: DISABLED SPORTS THANKS VETERANS

Our organization was originally incorporated in 1967 by World War II veterans of the Tenth Mountain Division, the ski troops. They had experimented all through the 50's with ways to continue skiing despite the loss of limbs. The name they gave the organization back then was "National Amputee Skiers Association". It was one of three amputee ski clubs in the country. The others being the "Flying Outriggers" of Oregon and the "Three Trackers of Ohio'. There are 100 chapters today.

As the Viet Nam war continued, a good number of VN vets were recruited out of the military hospitals on the west coast. We learned to ski at the Donner Summit. I united the three clubs and a few new adaptive ski programs into one organization in the early 70's and VN vets going home to other states helped form new chapters. So it was VN vets who carried the organization across the nation and later, the world. Kirk Bauer, our National CEO, came from our program here in the Sierra's. Kirk and I are the last of the VN vets still leading this organization and neither one of us would prefer to do anything else. It's our life's work.

For the last seven years Kirk and other representatives of DSUSA have walked the wards in military hospitals reaching out to Wounded Warriors disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan bringing full circle our sevice to those who served our nation. Many of DSUSA's chapters conduct sports camps for Wounded Warriors. They are our brothers and sisters.

Disabled Sports USA Far West is proud of our heritage and grateful to those who serve !!

Prostate Cancer ? Finding The Cancers That May Kill :: The Basics ...

It must be admitted that most men with recognized prostate cancer are beyond their middle ages: they are over 70. And in many of them, the cancer progresses very slowly, so that they can live ten years or more with their disease, and ultimately die from a quite unconnected problem, such as a heart attack or stroke. This has led to some doctors suggesting that most prostate cancers are better not found, as they only cause men to worry unnecessarily about dying from a disease that is not going to kill them.

?

There is good reason for this viewpoint. Post-mortem studies of men dying from other causes have found incidental small areas of cancers in their prostate glands in 20 per cent of men in their twenties, 30 per cent of men in their fifties, and in 70 per cent of men over 80. These were microscopic areas of cancer that had caused no symptoms in the men?s lifetimes. If the men had survived the disease, or avoided the accident (or even act of murder) that had killed them, very few of those cancers would eventually have developed enough to have become obvious. Many of them must have been very slow-growing. A much more important statistic is that fewer than 10 per cent of men will develop symptoms of prostate cancer in their lifetimes, and fewer than 3 per cent will actually die from the disease.

?

What we really need is to be able to detect early those cancers that do develop, and that somehow escape the body?s mechanisms that protect us against them. Happily, we are getting much better at doing just that.

Late Night 'Thank You Notes' From Jimmy Fallon

Virginia Sherwood/NBC

Jimmy Fallon says he spends almost 12 hours each day at the Late Night offices, which makes the rest of his life difficult. "If I want to play video games now, I have to schedule it," he tells Terry Gross.

Every single day of Jimmy Fallon's life is like Thanksgiving. The comedian and host of Late Night tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross that he is appreciative of the word moist ? for being the "worst word ever." He's thankful, too, for taco shells that have survived their long journey from factory to supermarket to his plate ? and then break the moment he fills them. And he's grateful that the name Lloyd starts with two L's. Otherwise, he says, it would just sound like "Loyd."

Fallon collects more than 100 nuggets of gratitude in his book, Thank You Notes. The book is based on a reoccurring segment on Late Night, when Fallon and his staff round up mundane things that don't get enough attention and give them each the praise they deserve.

"Like do you ever go down the hallway at work and there's someone walking at the same speed as you and right next to you so you're almost like walking together?" Fallon asks. "And you don't know who they are so you're like, 'Should we hold hands? Are you going to slow down? Do I speed up? One of us has to make a decision here.' So those types of things, they're just random but you go, 'Oh, yeah, there should be a joke somewhere about this.'"

Fallon has spent most of his career coming up with jokes and doing impressions. His early impersonations of Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, Pee-Wee Herman, Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy helped get him an audition in front of Lorne Michaels and then a job on Saturday Night Live, where he stayed for six years. After leaving the show to appear in several films, he was tapped by NBC to become the host of Late Night, after Conan O'Brien left in 2009 to prepare to take over Jay Leno's slot on The Tonight Show.

When he's not interviewing guests, Fallon spends a lot of time on Late Night impersonating musicians. He does spot-on versions of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, John Mayer and Neil Young. Last November, his Neil Young even famously dueted with the real Bruce Springsteen on a cover of Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair." The resulting duet became one of the most popular segments in Late Night history.

Fallon says that he's had always had a good ear for imitating others. At two, he perfected a James Cagney routine. By high school, he had Jerry Seinfeld down pat.

"I just had that thing, when I was growing up, where I'd just start talking like people," he says. "I would go visit a friend of mine's house and my mom would say 'You sound like Joey Gonzalez' because I would sound like my best friend."

Occasionally, he even runs into a celebrity right after he does his impersonation on Late Night. A recent segment parodied Donald Trump, whose show Celebrity Apprentice was interrupted by the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed.

Just after the taping, Fallon ran into Trump himself. "And I said, 'Hey Mr. Trump, I did an impression of you on the show that's airing tonight.'"

"You do great impressions," Trump replied.

"I don't want you to be upset," said Fallon.

Trump turned to rest of the people seated at his table and announced, "Jimmy Fallon's doing an impression of me tonight!"

"He knows I never kick anyone when they're down," Fallon says. "I kick them when they're up and they don't mind."

Interview Highlights

On his 'Whip My Hair' performance

"I think every impressionist has a Neil Young but you don't know what to do with it. It's like having a Jack Nicholson. Everyone has one. What do you do with it? So one of my writers said, 'Why don't you do a Neil Young doing a nice version of Willow Smith's 'Whip My Hair?' ... So we have a guitar and we're sitting in my office, trying to think of how Neil would do it."

On how he practiced for his gig at Late Night

"I would sit to the left of my wife every night at dinner and look at her and try to ask her about her food and stuff but you don't know what it's like until you're in the situation and talking to people. I interviewed strangers. I interviewed my mom. ... She was an awful guest. She kept wanting to cut to a clip. And we have no clip. She's not in a movie. She's my mother."

On reenacting Saturday Night Live as a child

"I was obsessed with the show and this is back when VCRs had just started to come out. ... I remember being obsessed with [the show]. My parents would tape it and they would watch it and cut out any sketches that were risque or dirty or things that we couldn't see. And the ones that were clean, we would be able to watch, me and my sister Gloria."

On Weekend Update

"Colin Quinn was leaving Weekend Update and Lorne Michaels said, 'Jimmy, I think you'd be great at doing Weekend Update.' And I said, 'I don't think so. I don't really read the newspaper all that much. I don't know much about the news. I'm the worst person for Weekend Update. Thank you so much. But no thank you. I'd rather not do it.' He said, 'I think it should be someone from the cast.' So they had auditions. A couple writers were auditioning. One of the writers auditioning was Tina Fey. She was just a writer at the time who wrote a lot of stuff for me and she was super fun and super funny and super hard-working. And sharp ? almost too sharp just to be by herself at the time.

"So I saw her audition, and I said, 'Tina's audition was amazing. It was hilarious.' And I talked to Lorne and he said 'I really think you should still do it. Tina's the head writer. No one knows who she is.' And I go, 'What about me and Tina?' And he goes, 'Yeah. I like that. I would see what that's like.' So he set up a test screening of Tina Fey and I in Conan O'Brien's studio over a weekend and we did a test run of what our Weekend Update would be like. And Lorne said, 'I think it would be great because she's the smart one and you're the guy who forgot to do his homework and you need to cheat off her. That's the dynamic.' And we got together and man, it just clicked."
