67 Year Old Fitness Fan Comments on Senior Health and Fitness ...

First question of course, is: What the heck is a 'liveable' diet?

Second question: What makes one better...or even the best?

Third question: Who cares?

Let's start with the third one. You should.

Now, the answer to the first question is that a 'liveable' diet is one you can live with. You don't need to count calories, buy a bunch of strange foods, memorize a bunch of "cans" and "cannot's" or carry around a chart or list. A 'liveable diet' is actually more a style of eating which can be easily followed almost anywhere. Perhaps just as important is that it is one which can be as easily followed for life...AND is made up of foods you will enjoy eating.

According to a recent study by the Negev Nuclear Research Center in Dimona, Israel, the best 'liveable diet' is not only the one which most easily produces healthy weight loss or promotes a healthy lifestyle, but is also the one that results in the least weight re-gain should the person stop specifically following the diet. This last is due, at least in part, to the "diet" producing new eating habits.

So, which ones were tested and which came out on top?

Well, no "fad diets" made it to the test. In fact, the "diets" were actually more "eating styles" than actual diets. After all, the idea was to find something which could easily fit into a person's life and which would NOT require wierd food needs.

The three eating plans tested were: a low-fat, low-calorie diet; a Mediterranean-style, low-calorie diet; and a low-carb eating plan without calorie restrictions.

While all three worked well, with participants still benefiting four years after the study officially ended, the best liveable diet turned out to be the Mediterranean style diet. A Mediterranean diet is generally one which is rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats like olive oil, and moderate amounts of alcohol. It is also low in sweets, meats, and saturated fats like butter. Red wine is a good choice if you must have alcohol, by the way.

Please note a couple of important words in the statements in the previous paragraph. "Moderate" in relation to alcohol consumption is one example. No more than two drinka a day for men or one a day for women. However, you are probably NOT going to gain 25 pounds or fall over dead if you go to a party and have a drink or two extra.

Another word to look at is "low" in the sentence about meats and sweets. Just keep your portions down. Eat fish instead of meat once in a while. Fill up on the veggies, fruits, and whole grains.
