Security guard accused of hitting Pasco teen's bike with golf cart

An apartment complex security guard was arrested after he used his golf cart to ram the bike of a teen late Saturday night, according to the Pasco Sheriff's Office.

About 10:18 p.m., deputies said James Coward, a security guard at Ryals Chase Apartments in Zephyrhills, was patrolling the complex when he met two juveniles.

Coward told deputies the kids were horsing around on their bikes when one of them turned in front of his cart and he hit him, knocking the teen from the bike.

Coward, 60, told deputies after the incident, he was called a racial slur.

The victim told deputies he was being chased by Coward when the security guard rammed the cart into the bike, knocking it over. The cart rolled over the 15-year-old, dragging him and the bike several feet.

The teen suffered large abrasions to his right shoulder and right leg.

That was the second altercation between the security guard and the juveniles that night.

According to one of the witnesses, Coward confronted the teens earlier and grabbed the shirt of the 15-year-old whose bike was later struck.

The victim told deputies he was sitting in front of a friend's house at the time when Coward pulled up in his golf cart and accused the teenagers of stealing a flashlight. An argument took place and that's when Coward left the cart and grabbed his shirt, according to the incident report.

A short time later Coward spotted the teens riding their bikes in the complex and, according to the 15-year-old, started chasing them.

Coward was charged with simple battery and aggravated battery and was taken to the Land O' Lakes Jail. He was released on $1,600 bond about 14 hours after his arrest.
