Canada's restaurant industry adds more than 33000 jobs

TORONTO ?? ?Canadian restaurants, bars and caterers created 33,891 new jobs between January and August 2012 compared to a year earlier. The restaurant industry is the second-fastest job creator so far this year ? just behind the construction industry, according to Statistics Canada?s Survey of Employment, Payroll and Hours.

The restaurant industry will contribute $65-billion in sales to the Canadian economy this year, and directly employs more than a million people across Canada, or 6.5% of the country?s workforce.

?The restaurant industry is truly a people business, and one that offers opportunity at all levels ? from students looking for that all-important first job, to highly skilled chefs and sommeliers, to senior level executives,? says Garth Whyte, president and CEO of the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association (CRFA).? ?I?m proud to say that our industry employs more people than agriculture, forestry, auto manufacturing, oil and gas extraction, and mining combined.?

CRFA is holding a Restaurant Industry Summit on Parliament Hill next week to share information about the industry with Members of Parliament and discuss issues ranging from labour shortages to taxation.

CRFA (www.crfa.ca) is one of Canada?s largest business associations, with more than 30,000 members representing restaurants, bars, caterers, institutions and other foodservice providers.?????
