Internet marketing tips for Beginners

This article by Brian E McClelland suggests that there is a shark tank waiting for the beginner to plunge into.? However, once you read about the requirements for active mentoring, low costs, and honest appraisal of levels of success, you?ll see that Empower Network more than fits the bill!

Internet marketing tips for Small Businesses

1. In the words of Ron Simon, ?What the hell are you trying to do?? What is the goal of your website? Ultimately, it should be to drive more business, but how exactly will it do that? Start with one goal ? such as increasing the traffic to you site ? and branch out from there. It?s important to set goals, but it?s just as important to come up with a system for measuring those goals.

2. Evaluate your website?s content ? Content is King. What does your website say? Does it have content that is unique and useful? Will people learn anything when they visit your site? How often do you add new content? Does your website have content worth reading? Does your content match that of your business goals?

3. The <title> tag. Visit your website. Look at the very top of your browser window. What do you see? Does it describe the page you?re looking at? Is it a unique description? Does it contain the keywords you want people to associate with that page of your website? If you?re a local business, does it contain your key local search keywords? If you can?t answer ?yes? to all these questions, check out this article about no worries.

4. Call tracking and analytics. You can?t improve upon what you can?t measure. Analytics provide a tremendous amount of incredibly useful data, such as where your website visitors come from, how long they stay, and what they do on your site. Google analytics is free and pretty darn good, and we recommend it. We also recommend you make sure you can track every lead that?s generated by your website.

If you don?t have a dedicated phone number for the website that you can track calls on, visit Mongoose Metrics. They?ll issue you a unique tracking phone number and then forward every call you get to your main number while tracking the number of calls you receive, who called, how long the call lasted?etc. It?s surprisingly inexpensive.

5. Take advantage of free local business directories. There are a few great local business directories that are completely free. Get your business listed in each of the directories below and you?ll see a boost in website visitors and hopefully a boost in business too. (By the way, we don?t advocate paying for any directory listings anywhere unless you?ve got a very good reason.)

6. Check out your competition. Visit your competitors? websites. Do searches for keywords related to your business. Find out what others in your vertical are doing and saying. This is a great way to get ideas and take stock of your own company?s online marketing efforts.

Does this dog look ugly to you?

7. Repeat after me ? ?I have an ugly baby.? A lot of business owners love their websites, but the first step to improving your website is to admit that it has some deficiencies. No website is perfect, and every website can use improvement. If you have a website, you have an ugly baby [sorry]. Just how ugly your website is, however, is open to discussion.

8. Start blogging. Every business, and we mean every business, has something to gain by blogging and absolutely nothing to loose. The list of benefits is long, but here?s a short list of reasons small businesses should blog.? Do you actually take heed of internet marketing tips when you read them?

9. Have you put online video. Video is still a little cutting-edge for some, but the benefits can?t be understated. Online video is the wave of the future, and every business needs to have something on YouTube, Metacafe, etc. If you?re concerned about expense here, keep in mind there are some low-budget options that won?t damage your brand while still providing concrete benefits.

Internet marketing tips for Online Promotion

Here is an article by?By Ken McCarron, eHow Contributor

Search Engine Optimization

  • The term search engine optimization or SEO has often been used to describe just about any type of Internet marketing, and sometimes Internet marketing itself. They are not one in the same. SEO in its truest sense, refers to optimizing web pages to rank higher in search engine results pages. There are some technical internet marketing tips that help, such as modifying title tags and meta tags, but for the most part it is about content. If your site contains relevant content and keywords that people are actually searching for, you will rank higher.

Pay Per Click

  • Pay per click, or PPC for short, are the small text ads you find down the right hand side of a Google or Yahoo search results page. Google?s version, called Adwords, generates billions of dollars per year. Basically, these are ads that you create based on certain keywords that are relevant to your business. You can select the maximum you will pay for each click on the ad, and you only pay when someone clicks on your ad. Amounts can vary from as little as a few cents per click for less popular keywords to 50 dollars per click for very competitive keywords.

Article Marketing

  • Article marketing, also known as ?bum marketing,? is a free method of online promotion in that it doesn?t require any money up front. It does require you to write articles about different elements of your business, based on specific keywords, and submit them to online article directories. You will include a resource box at the bottom of the article with a link to your website. When people search for keyword phrases in your article, it will show up on the left-hand side of a search results page. This is also known as ?organic search results.?

Email Marketing

  • Email marketing is the ?keep in touch? element of Internet marketing. If people aren?t sure whether they want to buy on your first contact, you have the opportunity to reach them again and again until they are. You will offer a newsletter or free report on your website in exchange for email addresses. Then you have the ability to contact them and market products and services that match their interests. Be sure to mix it up and send emails that aren?t selling anything at least half the time. This will create trust and let them know you care about them.

Internet marketing tips for Retail

From Shari Waters, former About.com Guide

?

1. Send a Press Release

One of the fastest ways to spread word about your store, and products or services, is by sending a press release. Media outlets all thrive on press releases every day. The abundance of online news distribution services is now making it easier than ever for retailers to announce new product lines, special events and other shop news.

2. Submit Product Feeds

Retailers that sell products online should most definitely be using product feeds to reach a broader audience. A product feed is simply a file generated from the website that lists product details such as photos, descriptions, pricing and even specials. These product feeds can be submitted to shopping comparison websites, search engines and also made available to customers using feed readers.

3. Share Your Knowledge

There are many ways a retailer can appear as an expert or voice of authority in a certain industry. One way is to host classes, seminars or workshops in-store. Another way is by signing up to teach related continuing education courses at the local college.

Internet retailers have known for years that one popular way to share knowledge and gain extra exposure is by writing content for free distribution. Article marketing, as it is known, has the ability to increase awareness of a retailer?s presence, online and off.

4. Create a Newsletter

Newsletter and email marketing is key in keeping in touch with the customers you?ve manage to get in your store or on your website. It takes a lot of work to gain a customer. Why let them leave without offering a way to stay in contact?

5. Submit Your Site

Many new website owners submit their site to the major search engines and then sit back and wait for customers to come. While this is an important step for marketing online, website owners often overlook all the other directories available.

Look for specialized link directories and niche sites to submit your business information and website. Not only will these directories help increase your link popularity, but they can drive highly targeted traffic to your retail store.

6. Grab Local Listings

Google, Yahoo, Superpages and other directories and search engines are creating tools for local shoppers to find your business, provide maps of location, hours of operation and even coupons. Many of these listings are free with upgrade options for a fee.

7. Create Your Own Commercials

If your store has paid for a print display ad in the local newspaper, you may know how ineffective marketing without spoken word or visual imagery can be. Radio and television marketing may be too pricey for your shop?s budget, but there is another option.

Video marketing online allows a retailer to extend the reach of their message to a larger audience for little investment. Unlike traditional marketing, producing a unique online ad or video to convey your message or brand your store can have an extremely high ROI.

8. Join Social Networking

Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn may or may not help you sell your products but if that?s where your customers hang out, maybe you should too. The blogs on these sites can help retailers keep in touch with shoppers, make announcements or feature new merchandise and promotions.

9. Offer an Affilate Program

One very popular and effective method of Internet marketing for retailers is the affiliate program. This is the process in which a retailer pays one or more affiliates for each sale or customer gained as a direct result of the affiliate?s marketing efforts. The retailer generally provides banners, buttons or product feeds for the affiliate?s use.

Many retailers manage their own affiliate programs while others opt to use a third party to track sales, orders and payments to the affiliate. The amount of commission or bonus paid out is determined by the retailer and outlined an affiliate agreement.

10. Give Something Away

Shoppers love to get something for nothing! Retailers know this and have used freebies and giveaways as marketing tools for decades. Pens with the business name on them at the checkout counter and shopping bags with store logo are so commonplace in a retail store that we may not even see them as marketing items. Unfortunately, these items can actually become quite costly.

Not all giveaways must be expensive. A big advantage of marketing online is the opportunity to easily and quickly offer contests, coupon codes, product samples and even valuable content as promotional giveaways.
