Let's Talk Communications ? Oh, By The Way?

Communications on a construction project are crucial in the success of a project.? Just like good fences make good neighbors, good communications yields good results.

Too many projects start with poor communications at the onset of the project.? This is when the plans and specifications do not reliably represent the work to be performed.? If the project owner/developer is unfamiliar with the design and construction process, the first warning flag for bad communications will be in the bid period.? If the bidders are asking a larger number of questions regarding the plans and specifications there is a good chance the design documents are not communicating the owners? requirements for the project.? This could be a problem with the owner or design team.

A related warning sign is the architects and engineers not providing answers to the questions being asked.? An answer to a questions or series of questions of ?read the plans and specifications? should send up a red flag to owners. ??This can indicate the designers and/or contractors have not done their job properly to this point in time.? This will lead to problems on the project if not corrected prior to the bid.

Communications problems during the course of construction can only worsen the project outcome ? for all parties.? The only beneficiaries to a bad project are the attorneys and experts brought in during the dispute resolution process.
