Iran denies officials to be questioned over Buenos Aires bombing

DUBAI (Reuters) - Tehran denied on Tuesday it had agreed to allow international investigators to question Iranian officials over the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires as part of a plan to form a truth commission.

Following the bombing which killed 85 people, Argentinian authorities in 2007 secured Interpol arrest warrants for five Iranians and a Lebanese. Iran denies links to the attack.

Argentina said last month it had agreed with Iran to establish a "truth commission" made up of foreign legal experts to review all the relevant documentations of the attack, which Argentine courts accuse Tehran of sponsoring.

But Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast on Tuesday denied plans that Iranian officials would be questioned over the bombing.

"This report is a lie," Mehmanparast said during a news conference in Tehran reported by the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA).

Israel and Jewish groups had criticized the pact as they fear it could weaken the case against Iranian officials. It was also seen as a diplomatic victory for Iran as it faces international isolation and sanctions over its nuclear program.

The memorandum of understanding between Iran and Argentina reportedly outlined plans for Argentine legal officials to meet in Tehran to question people named by Interpol.

Iranian Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi is among the Iranian officials sought by Argentina, which is home to Latin America's largest Jewish community.

Najib likens opposition leaders to ?water and oil?

Najib said unlike the opposition, the BN adopted the concept of power sharing among component parties. ? File pic

KULAIJAYA, Feb 12 ? Datuk Seri Najib Razak has likened PAS, DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leaders as ?water and oil? that cannot be united to lead the country.

The prime minister said as opposition leaders subscribed to different political ideologies, struggles and agendas, it would difficult for them to cooperate with each other.

?DAP has Karpal Singh, Lim Kit Siang while PAS has Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat. Like water and oil, they are impossible mixture.

?At the same time, how are they want going to fit in Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim? All of them are very different from all aspects,? he said to a crowd of more than 10,000 attending the Johor-level Chinese New Year celebration, here, today.

Najib, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said unlike the opposition, the BN adopted the concept of power sharing among component parties and held the reins of government since independence.

Meanwhile, the prime minister asked the people of Johor to give a cold shoulder to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Khalid Ibrahim, who was scheduled to visit to the state today, and not be swayed by his promises.

Khalid is no different from other PKR and opposition leaders who are good at ?selling promises? but are not good at honouring them despite presenting them in their party manifesto, said Najib.

He said the people of Selangor were still awaiting the implementation of various promises made by the state government since 2008, including free water (for residents using bulk meters), and aid for single mothers and the elderly.

?The government should be judged by the implementation of its promises to the people. That?s what Barisan Nasional is doing, whatever we promised, we delivered them,? he said, adding that the BN would fulfil whatever promises it is going to make in the next general election?s manifesto.

Najib said in a short space of time, the BN government had provided 139 goods and services under the 1Malaysia concept to ease the burden of the people.

?On the contrary, the opposition only knows how to organise street demonstrations and overturn a police car. They (the opposition) held Bersih 1.0, Bersih 2.0, but we responded with the 1Malaysia People?s Aid (BR1M) 1.0, BR1M
2.0 and the next one, BR1M 3.0 to help the people,? he said. ? Bernama

New Antidote Puts Muscle Into Cyanide Defense

Humanity and wildlife aren?t often thought of as compatible entities. After all, people are the reason that the world?s panda population is dwindling, elephants and rhinos are being poached into near nonexistence and on our own soil, bear cubs are being orphaned by the dozens. But the idea that we can coexist peacefully is more than a utopian dream; in Namibia, it?s a reality, and it?s helping protect the country?s endangered cheetah population.
