College basketball: Washington?s C.J. Wilcox ready for lead role

College basketball: Washington?s C.J. Wilcox ready for lead role

C.J. Wilcox has done it quietly and without much fanfare.

He?s taken criticism for turning his back on Utah, when it seemed as if he were a lock to be a Ute coming out of Pleasant Grove High four years ago. He?s bided his time and waited his turn in Washington?s backcourt, annually stacked with NBA draft prospects. And Lorenzo Romar, his head coach, has been present through it all, pushing Wilcox to become more assertive, encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone whenever possible.

?

C.J. Wilcox file

? Played basketball at Pleasant Grove High

? Is currently projected as a second-round NBA pick by multiple websites

? Will start at shooting guard for Washington

? Is a former Tribune first-team All-State selection

? Was injured this past season with a stress fracture in his leg

? Is regarded as one of the best pure shooters in college basketball

Now, Wilcox seems to be in full bloom.

He heads into his junior season with the Huskies as their top perimeter option. At 6-foot-5, Wilcox is regarded as one of the best shooters in the country. Next summer, he may be the next player from the state of Utah to be drafted into the NBA, much like Damian Lillard and Justin Hamilton this year, and Jimmer Fredette from a season ago.

"If he were to have a good season, and some things were to fall into place, people think he has the potential to be a first-round pick," Romar said. "If that were to happen, I?m sure he would take a good, hard look at it."

Already, nbadraft.net and draftexpress.com have Wilcox on their mock draft boards. Wilcox enhanced his reputation this summer by playing well at the Kevin Durant Skills Academy, an invitation-only camp.

Each day, Wilcox enters a gym and puts up 500 jump shots, minimum. His athleticism, speed and defense have improved as well.

"I try to get better whenever I touch a ball," Wilcox said. "I thought the Kevin Durant camp was very good. It gave me a chance to test myself against some of the best players in the country. It?s given me a lot of confidence that I can play with and compete against anyone."

Opportunity is what?s most important for Wilcox this coming season. Washington has always been stacked in the backcourt. This year, however, there?s no Terrence Ross, no Tony Wroten, no Isaiah Thomas to share shots with.

Wilcox is the man on the perimeter, which will be new to him. He will receive the bulk of the shots, and the chances to improve on his sophomore season, when he averaged 14.2 points per game, will be plenty.

story continues below

"I think it?s hard for guys to go away and to want to get away from home," said Johnnie Bryant, who trains Wilcox in the offseason. "But C.J. was able to go to a program that?s given him the freedom to do his thing. He has a free spirit. He?s one of the best shooters around, and he?s making a name for himself."

Wilcox has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He will also be 22 years old next summer. The NBA is short on its tolerance for older players, and Wilcox is swiftly approaching that threshold, after redshirting his first season.

As a result, he and his father, Craig, are approaching this season as potentially his last in a college uniform. Sure, Wilcox could struggle in his new role, or experience injury like he did late last season.

But, if Wilcox flourishes, and Washington plays well as a team, there is a very real chance that he will declare early for the draft.

Romar knows this possibility well. He?s seen players leave his program early in the past three seasons. He?s also ready for it to go either way with his star shooting guard, who already has an NBA skill in his jump shot.

"We haven?t been surprised by anyone leaving our program yet," Romar said. "I think C.J. is poised to have a tremendous season. He?s come in from day one and been one of the top shooters on our team."

Wilcox knows that he has to make improvements to his overall game. He?s been playing better defense, and he?s been more aggressive off the dribble. If anything, though, this year is a test to see if he can truly handle the spotlight that a top option typically attracts.

Insurance News - Investing For Financial Independence

WASHINGTON, July 17 -- The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards issued the following news release:

Financial insecurity has reached record levels as more Americans sacrifice long-term financial goals to pay for today's necessities. According to Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. Consumer Advocate Eleanor Blayney, CFP(R), consumers can reclaim their long-term financial security by following a smart, pragmatic approach to investing.

"Today many Americans lack the financial resources to exercise a full range of choice over how they live," says Blayney. "Aspirations of owning a home, providing for a family, and retiring comfortably are being hampered by today's financial necessities. By prudently investing now, one can open up the future to the possibilities the American Dream promises."

Creating an investment strategy as part of a financial plan is one of the 12 steps in CFP Board's year-long "12 for '12 Approach to Financial Confidence." Blayney recommends that consumers consider six key points when making an investment plan.

* Invest in what you understand: Venturing into unfamiliar investment areas or exotic, complicated derivatives can be a prescription for failure. Start simple by creating cash reserves first for tomorrow's needs. As you become a more experienced investor with a larger portfolio and your time horizon gets longer, you can then add more complex and risky investments.

* Be prepared for losses: Losses are a necessary part of investing: without some downside, there can be no upside and, therefore, no possibility of creating a better future. For example, when you play it safe by choosing only cash or fixed income investments and avoid equities, you lose to inflation and diminished wealth in the long-term.

* "Not enough" is no excuse. Start now. Start anyway: The time to invest is now. Even if it's only a small amount, every dollar put towards meeting your future needs helps. Start small by looking at what you're spending your money on every day and cutting out one or two small expenses. Take the money you save and start investing. The earlier you begin, the less you need to invest to meet any given future goal. (This is due to the power of compound interest. For an even more powerful device, put that compound interest into a tax-deferred investment vehicle).

* Build flexibility into your investment plan: The future is inherently uncertain, so it's important to hedge your bets and position your investments with a variety of economic possibilities in mind. Whether interest rates move up or down, the Eurozone disbands, or the Republicans take the Senate in November, there should be enough diversification in your portfolio so that some of your investments come out ahead.

* Don't simply follow the leaders: Yesterday's successful strategy usually becomes today's loser. Investing in the latest hot sector or stock (think Facebook), just because everyone else is, is a bit like following others straight into enemy fire. It's a good way to lose big. Be a contrarian investor - it pays to think differently from what everyone else is doing.

Max Comp

* Ask for outside help: Consumers can use the steady hand of experienced professionals - those who by training and experience can look through the fear and greed that often hinders people when making decisions about money - to plan their investments. Look for a CFP(R) professional to help you with an investment plan, as well as to assist you with the ongoing management and assessment of your investments.

"Investing involves first looking at the financial realities of today - at one's cash flow, debt, and exposure to risk and then considering the possibilities for the future: a secure and healthy retirement, education for children, and a satisfying legacy for family and community," says Blayney. "The critical planning link between the two, between today's facts and tomorrow's goals, is investing. Let a CFP(R) professional help you invest for the future you aspire to achieve."

12 for '12 APPROACH TO FINANCIAL CONFIDENCE

In January, CFP Board launched a new initiative called "12 for '12 Approach to Financial Confidence" where all the components and steps for successful personal financial management are presented, one each month throughout the year including: establishing realistic goals, tax planning, emergency and risk management, investing, retirement, debt management, and estate planning.

South Florida fish often mislabeled

A new study shows that South Florida restaurants and supermarkets are mislabeling fish at an alarming rate, The Miami Herald reported.

The study by a marine conservation group, Oceana, tested 96 fish samples purchased at 60 locations between West Palm Beach and Key Largo. Oceana found that red snapper was mislabeled 86 percent of the time and grouper was mislabeled 16 percent of the time.

Sushi sellers received the poorest ratings. The group found 58 percent of sushi samples were mislabeled. Grocery stores mislabeled at a rate of about 36 percent, followed by supermarkets at 8 percent, according to the Herald.

Still, Oceana found that locations in South Florida fared better in the survey than previous surveys in Boston and Southern California.

A Review of General Roofing Materials and Design

Roofs are the main element in any building, especially in houses. Buildings could be considered unfinished and are uninhabitable. Yet, in the unlikely scenario that, for some unusual reason, your recently bought residence does not have a protective overhead lid, here is a guide to a number of the primary roof types and regularly used materials that you can utilize to cover that gaping hole over your head as fast as possible.

Two of the most popular designs for roofs in Manchester are the gable roof and the hip roof. A gable roof comprises two identical panels linked at an upward position. Its widespread usage lends to the fact that there are no unique layout considerations needed when setting one up. Then again, there are implications with living in an area where winds are always blowing.

Homeowners in hurricane-prone areas should replace their gable roofs with other designs that can endure winds, like the hip roof. Hip roofs can sidetrack winds and are well suited for houses in windy areas. No matter what style you decide on, roofers encourage the following materials for building general-purpose roofs.

Metal has become a preferred option for NH roofers who have done modern residences. It is absolutely lighter than conventional roof covering materials like wood and asphalt, allowing it to be effortless to build. Additionally, thanks to technological advances that has rendered metal more flexible, metal roofs now are available in different shapes and styles to mimic the look of wood and tile shingles. Metal shingles are not at risk of burning from prolonged sun exposure; on the contrary, its special roofing properties enable the material to reflect warmth off the roof, and keep the temperature inside the house.

Asphalt, however, is the most preferred material used in American houses. Its widespread use in roofing NH homes is undeniable evidence of its sturdiness. Moreover, given that asphalt is easily available in any vicinity with a home improvement center, repair and replacement is quick and easy.

No matter what the material or design that you finally go for your roof structure, make certain that your choices fit the conditions of your location. Right now, the prominent trend in Manchester NH roofing has slowly transferred away from do-it-yourself roofing projects, which typically result in shoddily built frames, to expert construction by qualified roofing companies that provide outstanding workmanship. Browse homerenovations.about.com/od/houseexteriorframework/a/artroofmaterial.htm for more detailed information on widely used roofing materials.

(AP) ? Egypt's top generals led hundreds of mourners Saturday at a funeral honoring former spy chief Omar Suleiman, who for decades served as a key pillar of ousted President Hosni Mubarak's authoritarian regime.

Long a shadowy figure in Egypt, Suleiman continued to play a divisive role in the country even after his death Thursday at a hospital in the U.S. at the age of 76. The country's armed forces opted to honor him with a military funeral despite fierce condemnation from activists and Islamists for whom Suleiman, a former general, was a figure stained by his role in the suppression of opposition groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood.

On Saturday, an honor guard carried aloft the former spy chief's coffin, draped in Egypt's red, white and black flag, before placing him to rest at a military cemetery in Cairo.

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads Egypt's powerful military council, led the armed forces' delegation at the ceremony. President Mohammed Morsi, who is from the Brotherhood and was sworn as Egypt's new leader late last month, sent a representative from his office.

Also in attendance was a delegation from the Palestinian Fatah movement, led by Azzam al-Ahmed, who is Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' point man in talks with the rival Hamas. Suleiman's intelligence agency was a key broker in negotiations between the two factions.

Suleiman died Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where he had been treated since Monday. The clinic said in a statement that Suleiman died from "complications from amyloidosis, a disease affecting the heart, kidneys and other organs."

That, however, failed to prevent conspiracy theories from quickly swirling in Cairo.

The front-page of Egypt's independent Dostor daily ran the headline "Omar Suleiman was killed," while one mourner at Saturday's funeral carried a poster with the words: "Who killed Omar Suleiman?"

The rumors surrounding his death are a reflection of the mystery that surrounded the man known in Egypt as "the black box" while he was still alive.

Tall, thin and often shown in dark sunglasses, Suleiman was Egypt's point man in cooperation with the United States in the post 9/11 rendition program in which terror suspects snatched by the Americans were shipped to Egypt and other countries for interrogation, sometimes involving torture.

He was considered ousted President Hosni Mubarak's closest lieutenant, a key pillar of his authoritarian regime and holder of many secrets. He handled the regime's most sensitive issues like relations with the U.S. and Israel, and the fierce battle against Islamists.

He was appointed Mubarak's vice president during last year's uprising in an attempt to quell the protests demanding the downfall of the regime. In the end, it was Suleiman who appeared on state TV on Feb. 11, 2011 to announce Mubarak's resignation and the military's seizure of power.

Suleiman largely vanished from sight after that, but re-emerged in April in a surprise and short-lived attempt to join the race for president. He said he was running to prevent the Brotherhood from coming to power, warning that it would turn Egypt into a religious state.

He was disqualified on technical grounds along with two Islamist candidates, including the Brotherhood's initial contender.

Skeptics believe Suleiman's last minute entry and quick exit from the race was meant to soften public opinion about the Islamists' disqualification.

Suleiman also testified in the trial of Mubarak, who was later sentenced to life in prison for failing to stop the killing of protesters during the uprising. In his testimony, Suleiman denied Mubarak issued orders to shoot at protesters but said the president did learn about the killings when he ordered the formation of an investigative committee. Mubarak supporters blame that testimony for bringing the conviction.

But it was his years as Mubarak's spy chief that earned him the ire of liberal activists and Islamists alike.

A statement released Saturday by the ultraconservative Gamaa Islamiya criticized honoring Suleiman with a military funeral.

Many of the group's members spent more than a decade in prison for their opposition to Mubarak. The group fought a low intensity insurgency against his regime in the 1980s and most of the 1990s, but later renounced violence.

"Omar Suleiman was a pillar of the old regime and dedicated his life to its service and its crimes, including various forms of torture," the group said, adding that Suleiman should have been buried in "quiet away from displays of honor."
