Agriculture Ministry: No Locusts to Plague Israel for Passover

Israeli agricultural authorities have vowed that no locusts will plague the Jewish State on Passover this year, saying they have managed to exterminate nearly all of the swarm that made it across the border into the country from Egypt.

The deployment of anti-locust pesticide in southern Israel continued in aerial and ground spraying at dawn on Thursday morning, a spokesperson for the Agricultural Ministry said.

Most of the swarm was eliminated, and it appears that weather may take care of the rest.

A massive infestation of more than 30 million of the insects ? a plague of Biblical proportions ? struck last weekend, stripping clean the fields and farms of the Egyptian region of Giza, home to the pyramids.

A much smaller swarm of ?only one million? made it across the border from Sinai into southern ?Israel and Gaza by Sunday, devastating potato crops in both areas and prompting officials to take immediate action.

Some locals in Israel also worked quickly ? racing to gather the locusts for a rare, ancient tasty treat.?

Tel Aviv resident Meir Rane told the BBC he left his home at 2:30 a.m. in order to reach?fields in the Negev in time to stay until 5:00 a.m. gathering the locusts in large cloth sacks. ?Locusts don?t fly at night,? he said. ?We eat them. It?s kosher according to Scripture,? he added. There are four varieties of the insect that are listed in the Torah as kosher.

?We collect them, put them in the oven. They come out like chips. You could put barbecue sauce on them,? he smiled.

?Fortunately, today?s forecast of easterly winds means no additional swarms are expected,? the ministry said in a statement Thursday. ?Nevertheless, we are carefully monitoring the situation in Egypt? to ensure no additional swarms follow their brethren across the border.

(AP) ? Reactions to the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez were as mixed, polemical and outsized as the leader was in life, with some saying his passing was a tragic loss and others calling it an opportunity for Venezuela to escape his long shadow.

Seen as a hero by some for his anti-U.S. rhetoric and gifts of cut-rate oil, others considered him a bully.

A teary-eyed Bolivian President Evo Morales, one of Chavez's closest allies and most loyal disciples, declared that "Chavez is more alive than ever."

"Chavez will continue to be an inspiration for all peoples who fight for their liberation," Morales said Tuesday in a televised speech. "Chavez will always be present in all the regions of the world and all social sectors. Hugo Chavez will always be with us, accompanying us."

In Cuba, which has come to rely on Venezuela for billions of dollars in oil at preferential terms during Chavez's presidency, some were worried that the loss of their No. 1 ally could have a negative ripple effect on the island.

"It's a very tough blow ... Now I wonder: What is to be of us?" said Maite Sierra, a 72-year-old Havana resident.

"It's troubling what could come now, first for Venezuela but also for Cuba," said Sergio Duran, a Havana resident. "Everything will depend on what happens in Venezuela, but in any case it will never be the same as with Chavez, even if Chavez's party wins" in upcoming elections.

Relations with the United States were strained under Chavez.

President Barack Obama issued a statement saying that the United States reaffirms its support for the "Venezuelan people and its interest in developing a constructive relationship with the Venezuelan government."

"As Venezuela begins a new chapter in its history, the United States remains committed to policies that promote democratic principles, the rule of law, and respect for human rights," according to the statement.

Some of the Venezuelans living in Florida reacted with cautious optimism that there will be change in their homeland following his death.

In the Miami suburb of Doral, Venezuelans watched on television as the country's vice president, Nicolas Maduro, announced that Chavez had died.

At a popular restaurant, one person cheered at the news, but the rest watched quietly and refrained from any celebration. An hour later, people began arriving with Venezuelan flags, cheering and crying out joyfully. Beneath the jubilation, though, was worry about what happens next.

Though Chavez left a socialist movement in firm control in Venezuela, some question how new leadership will be formed there.

"Although we might all be united here in celebration today, we don't know what the future holds," said Francisco Gamez, 18, who showed up at the El Arepazo restaurant in Doral in a track suit adorned with the Venezuelan flag.

An estimated 189,219 Venezuelan immigrants live in the United States, with 91,091 in the state of Florida, according to U.S. Census figures. Many are anti-Chavez and came to the United States after he rose to power.

Mario Di Giovanni, a Venezuelan student activist in Miami who helped organize voters in October, said he was apprehensive but hopeful about Venezuela's future.

"I always knew that for things to get better they had to get worse," he said. "So I guess this is the first step toward real change in Venezuela."

Republican U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida called Chavez's death "an opportunity for democracy in Venezuela."

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez, another Chavez ally, declared three days of mourning nationwide and ordered the Argentine flag hung at half-staff. She also prepared to travel to Venezuela.

In Nicaragua, another nation that broadly benefited from Venezuelan cut-rate oil, Rosario Murillo, the wife and spokeswoman of President Daniel Ortega, said Chavez is "one of the dead who never die."

In a television broadcast, Murillo said "We are all Chavez."

But Raul Martinez, a leader of the leftist, pro-government Sandinista Youth group, acknowledged in an interview with a local television station that "it is a hard blow,"

"Hugo Chavez was our best ally, but we are confident that the Venezuelans we will continue their support," Martinez.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter released a statement saying Chavez "will be remembered for his bold assertion of autonomy and independence for Latin American governments."

"We came to know a man who expressed a vision to bring profound changes to his country to benefit especially those people who had felt neglected and marginalized," Carter wrote. "Although we have not agreed with all of the methods followed by his government, we have never doubted Hugo Chavez's commitment to improving the lives of millions of his fellow countrymen."

At the United Nations, Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin called the death "a tragedy. He was a great politician for his country, Latin America and the world. He played a very important role in the development of relations between Venezuela and Russia, so we feel very badly about it."

There was no shortage of emotional farewells to a socialist hero who some feel rivaled the revolutionaries of the 1960s.

Famed Cuban folksinger Silvio Rodriguez, whose ode to revolutionary Che Guevara became famous, used the same words to bid farewell to Chavez.

"Hasta siempre, comandante" ? "Goodbye forever, commander," he wrote on this blog.

Students develop secure new procedure for online banking

Mar. 6, 2013 ? Researchers and students from the University of T?bingen, working with GFT Technologies AG, have developed a new process to make online banking more secure.?

The idea for the NFC-TAN process came about four years ago, was patented and further developed by students as part of their undergraduate studies, says Dr. Bernd Borchert of the University of T?bingen's Wilhelm Schickard Institute of Computer Science. NFC stands for Near Field Communication, an international standard which allows electronic devises to transmit data over short distances.

When a customer wants to make a bank transfer from home, the bank sends him a transaction authentication number (TAN) for each transaction, which is only confirmed when the TAN has been entered. Up to now, TANs were sent by text message or generated by a chip TAN device. The first system was handy but fraught with risk, says Borchert. Malware on a person's smartphone could read his password and enable others to log into his account via his own phone.

The new NFC-TAN process is similar to using a TAN generating device, but now that device is replaced by the user's smartphone. The user is shown a 2D code on his home computer, which he can scan into his phone using a special bank app. After a transaction is confirmed on the smartphone display, the customer holds his account card up to the phone. The card generates the TAN and transmits it via NFC to the phone. "It is a more secure procedure than the text-message TAN," says Borchert, adding that it is easier than using a TAN generator, because no extra device is needed. Nor does it cost more to start up or run. One in four smartphones on the market is NFC capable -- and banks are already planning to introduce NFC-capable account cards.

The T?bingen computer scientists are planning to market the process with the help of GFT Technologies, a Stuttgart IT company. Demonstrations are running at CeBIT from March 5-9.

Power failure blamed in New Orleans water issues

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Much of the city of New Orleans had little to no water pressure for about an hour Sunday, leaving residents with a potential contamination issue.

In a statement late Sunday morning, city officials said a boiler-room power failure at the plant supplying electricity to a water treatment plant caused the drop in pressure. They advised more than 300,000 residents on the Mississippi River's east bank to boil water for drinking, brushing their teeth or preparing food for at least 24 hours.

Within an hour of the 9 a.m. power failure, tap water was flowing again, and the city said engineers were investigating what caused the failure.

Water will be tested from across the city, the statement said. It takes at least 24 hours to tell whether potentially dangerous bacteria are present.

Most of New Orleans, including the French Quarter and Central Business District, is on the east bank. The treatment plant there provides about 135 million gallons of drinking water a day, compared with 11 million from the west bank treatment plant.

In October, a similar problem occurred at the east bank plant. City officials were criticized because they did not put out a notice that tap water might be contaminated until four hours after the plant shut down. A power problem in November 2010 also created similar conditions.

Across New Orleans on Sunday, some residents and businesses readied water supplies to use under the boil advisory. At Zeus' Place, a pet boarding and daycare business, owner Michelle Ingram said she was using bottled water for the 80 dogs and 7 cats there.

"We were sitting on 20 gallons of water and I just got 21 more," she said. "Which should last us through tomorrow afternoon ? and hopefully we'll know then whether or not the boil water order is still on."

Twitter came alive with residents bemoaning loss of water shortly after 9 a.m. Mayor Mitch Landrieu soon sent this tweet to his followers: "Widespread loss of water pressure reported. We are looking into it the matter." He later tweeted a link to the boil advisory.

Facebook 2013 Will Business Marketing Still be Effective ? Grid ...

Once upon a time, a tech-savvy young man by the name of Mark Zuckerberg, along with some of his comrades, launched a social networking hub called Facemash at a humble little institution known as Harvard University. This brainchild soon infiltrated major Ivy League schools like Yale and Stanford.

As it was growing exponentially, the creators moved their base of operations to the kingdom of California. This allowed the social hub to grow bigger, eventually convincing Zuckerberg and Co. to launch Facebook-as it is named now-publicly in September 2006.

FaceBook

The rest, as they say, is history? or is it?

On 18th of May 2012, the company had its initial public offering, forever marking this day a historical one. Not only was this IPO the biggest in technology, but it was also the biggest in the Internet industry with over $104 billion as market capitalisation.

But, despite high expectations from its founder whose unwillingness to take the company public lasted for years, this bid was met with inevitable issues and problems. Investors and stakeholders were racked with headaches, poring over millions of dollars wrongly placed, over-bidding of shares, over pricing, and so on.

Essentially, it was an IPO disaster.

FaceBook

So, now, we face the question: is Facebook still significant for business marketing?

Let?s try to answer that by analysing some elements?

Facebook, if you don?t already know, has managed to sink its claws into our community in just a few years. Don?t believe me? These numbers should convince you.

  • It accounts for over 50% of active Internet usage globally, while Google+ is in 2nd place with almost 26%, and YouTube and Twitter follow with almost 23%.
  • It attracts more than 618 million active users each day, amounting to 28% average increase each year.
  • It records more than 500+million Likes each day, 85.8% click-through shopping sessions, and 2.6% purchases made through FB pages.

But that?s not all?

Wall Vs Timeline

Aside from transitioning TheFacebook to only Facebook, one of the observable changes is the profile page. Two or three years ago, if you already had an account back then, you?ll remember that the page merely resembled a curriculum vitae, with your picture on the top left corner and your name and other info directly below it. You also had a Wall where friends and groups can post, adding to your own status updates.

But now, you have the Timeline, where your entire profile features a cover photo, a profile picture, your Info, and a chronological order of ALL updates from yourself, friends, groups, events, social games and apps, and so on.

Custom Page Tabs

This isn?t exactly a new thing, but the apps that support these are now accommodating more designs and flexibility in terms of usage. For instance, Facebook Markup Language is assisting programmers in making custom tabs for customers. This allows them to create customised subscription methods for mailing lists, easier information sharing about a company, or better techniques for online promos and giveaways.

Video + Voice

The company recently announced a new update to its mobile application. FB mobile users can now record and send videos directly from their smartphones. While this may seem like a defence mechanism against SnapChat, it actually gives businesspersons and Pay on Results marketers a lot of
leverage for mobile marketing.

Even if it?s not feasible for companies to send out videos or audio recordings of promotional materials, they can nevertheless use it to hold contests or receive feedback from their target market.

Apps Vs Adds

FB advertising has become easier and more advanced through the years, giving marketers more options in terms of reaching their audiences. For instance, Open Graph gives access to users? browsing habits and interests, allowing entrepreneurs to gauge what their clients want and don?t want.

This essentially results to better and more targeted forms of marketing, one that will suit all kinds of customers for any business niche.

Now let?s go back to the question?

Is Facebook still significant for business marketing? Absolutely. Judging by the numbers that it?s continuing to reap, it will continue to be in the next few years!

Castro brothers' successor may inherit a very different Cuba

/

Fidel Castro, left, and his brother, Raul, are preparing to pass the torch of power to a new generation.

By Carlos Rajo, Telemundo

News analysis

Raul Castro?s recent?announcement that he will leave power in 2018, and his appointment of 52-year-old Miguel Diez-Canel as first vice president and his de facto successor, are signs of the glacial pace of political change in Cuba.

Certainly, these announcements won?t satisfy those who for decades have been waiting for the Castro brothers? exit.

Nevertheless, the move marks the beginning of the passing of the torch of power to a new generation.

For the first time in half a century, there is the real possibility that a person who did not fight in the Cuban Revolution will lead the country. Diaz-Canel was not even born when Fidel Castro overthrew Fulgencio Batista in January 1959. Since then, a Castro has been in power in Cuba: first the now-retired, 86-year-old Fidel, and from 2006 to now, his younger brother, Raul, 81.

This generational change does not mean that Cuba will move to a different political system. There is no going back to capitalism, Raul Castro told the National Assembly on Sunday. Nevertheless, the move toward a generational change must be seen in the context of other reforms implemented by the younger Castro.

/

Cuba's new Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel, right, was not even born when Fidel Castro overthrew Fulgencio Batista in January 1959.

These reforms already are changing the face of Cuban socialism. Castro has introduced private farms, cooperatives in industries and activities outside agriculture, and an array of small business. Granted, these are restricted and heavily regulated, but still they are earning profits and starting to create a segment of wealthier, successful entrepreneurs. Cubans are also now allowed to sell houses and cars, and more recently, to travel abroad if they can get a visa from another country.

While little is known of Diaz-Canel?s ideology, it is likely that as the appointed Castro successor he is on board with the reforms.

The U.S. State Department reacted tepidly to Castro?s announcement and made clear that it would not be sufficient to prompt a lifting of the U.S. trade embargo. Although President Barack Obama doesn?t have election constraints in formulating a Cuba policy in his second term, the issue remains emotionally and politically charged in the U.S., and Congress is not likely to change its mind and lift the embargo while a Castro remains in power.

That doesn?t mean relations can?t change, however.

For instance, the Obama administration could remove Cuba from the list of states that sponsor terrorism. Cuba had been on that list since 1982, when it had the financial support of the Soviet Union and could afford to help guerrilla groups in Central and South America.

Cuba doesn?t have the resources to help armed groups - or even the political will to do so. Cuba is not Syria, North Korea or Iran in terms of being a threat to the U.S.

However, the lifting of the embargo is likely only after a period of more normal relations between the countries. There is also a legal obstacle: According to the Helms-Burton Act of 1996, the U.S. will recognize the legitimacy of a Cuban government only when someone other than a Castro is in power. For now, at least, it seems that won?t happen until 2018.

Demotions
The generational change in Cuba is real. Not only does Diez-Canel take the place of the 83-year-old Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, but the composition of others organs of power is younger as well. Eighty percent of the members of the National Assembly were born after the revolution, and the average age of members of the Council of State is 57, with about 60 percent having been born post-revolution.

As is the tradition in Cuba, Diez-Canel owes his influential position to one of the Castros -- in this case, Raul. As far back as 2003, the younger Castro talked about the ?solid ideological firmness? of the electrical engineer, who also has served as a university professor and party boss in the Cuban provinces of Villa Clara and Holguin. Notably, Diez-Canel served in the armed forces under Raul Castro and earned a reputation as a good manager of the military?s diverse commercial enterprises.

A look at the life and times of the Cuban leader who has outlasted nine U.S. presidents.

Diez-Canel will have to be careful. There have been several young leaders who once looked like they had been chosen as a Castro successor but later fell from grace. In every case -- Roberto Robaina, Carlos Lague, Felipe Perez Roque -- they went from being the heir apparent to being suddenly demoted without much ceremony or explanation. The difference is that all were put in their positions of power by Fidel Castro and were demoted when they fell out of favor with him. Diez-Canel is said to be Raul Castro?s favorite.

Assuming that nothing extraordinary happens before 2018, that Raul remains healthy and that there are no ideological purges ? ?corruption? is the favorite accusation of the Cuban leadership when it comes to making demotions -- ?the big question for Cuba, and for Diez-Canel himself, is the success of Raul?s reforms.

If they work well, perhaps the regime will develop a sort of hybrid socialism-communism with a dynamic, state-controlled capitalist economy. Or maybe day by day the reforms will penetrate Cuban society and ultimately destroy one the few communist systems left in the world. Diez-Canel, meanwhile, will start toying with the torch of power.

Only time will tell whether -- when the day comes in 2018 or sooner -- the Cuba that Diez-Canel has known will still be there for him to rule.
